I know the Pelicans probably wont have a first round pick and I know we dont really need a PG but damn I'd be pumped if they somehow got him.

I think he'll be a good pro.

Same here.

If I was the Pacers I would trade up to take him. Most teams have legit NBA PGs. They dont. And they sorely need a guy that can get to the rim and attack.

reminds me a little of Rondo. Cant shoot but can really get to the basket and get out and run

So if ULL had TWO players who will be drafted, how in the world did they not boss the sunbelt?

Yeah actually the NBA comparisons that I have seen scouts and analysts use for Payton is, in fact, Rondo. Some say a blend of Rondo and Devin harris.

quote:

Strengths: Tall, quick and talented offensive point guard ... Deadly first step and killer crossover allow him to get to the basket seemingly at will ... At 6'3", has ideal size for a point guard ... Quick hands and great defensive instincts allow him to get a ton of steals. Has averaged 2.4 per game over the past 2 seasons ... Great in transition. Good finisher at the rim ...Very athletic, is able to play above for highlight finishes ... Good defender who shows a lot of defensive potential with his length (6'7" wingspan) and quickness (lateral speed) ... Effective pull-up jumper, though needs to add range and consistency ... Seems to raise his game against good competition, as he did at the USA U19 tryouts and with his 20 points and 7 steals against Keith Appling and Michigan State last season ... Improving court vision ... Strong rebounding point guard ... Gets to the line at a good rate (9.5 attempts per game) ... Though a junior, he's a year young for his grade giving him added intrigue ...

Obviously his weakness is his ability to shoot from deep. But, PG is a spot where you can still be a great player and not be a great deep shooter. Rondo, Westbrook, Tony Parker, Kemba, John Wall, etc are some of the best PGs in the entire NBA. And struggle from deep.

I can see him being a good second unit guard who isn't that efficient but can initiate offense and get some 20 point games from time to time, not unlike Reggie Jackson before this season

He's a junior, same name as his father.

Les, I said he reminds me of Rondo when he was a freshman. I don't know if he'll be that good but it will be cool to have a player with a New Orleans Hornets tattoo in the NBA.
