Sooooo, .....TSA found a loaded revolver in my carry-on this morning.

I had TSA Pre-screening and thought I was breezing right through until the inspector stopped the conveyor belt. "Sir, do you have a gun in your bag? Do you own a gun?" me - "No sir, I have some at home, but I know exactly where all three are."
I had been keeping my S&W 642, at my girlfriends house in mid-city and my laptop-backpack was there as we worked on taxes this weekend. I remember thinking at some point that the 642 belongs at my place, but don't remember touching it; didn't know it was in the backpack and was shocked to be escorted off to a back room for "discussions".
I was embarrassed and contrite as hell and made every effort to be polite. After I was put through a background check, my gun was put through a background check, reports were filed by TSA, Jefferson Parish and NOLA airport officials, and attempts were made to contact FBI, I was allowed to go, given back my gun and cartridges.
I'm glad I made it to Texas today and am not the slammer.

I found this article afterwards because they said FBI/TSA may send me a letter. There may or may not be fines involved.
Y'all be careful and travel safe.

Damn. Sorry dude. That has to be tough. What did you do after getting your gun back? Miss your flight I suppose?

Damn, I'm surprised they let you go. I'd assume trying to sneak a gun onboard an airliner would have more significant penalties.

Shoot me your email. I may have some info you may find useful.

I found a safe place to lock up the gun and had to rebook the flight, because I was cutting it close as usual.

They specifically asked me, "Are you a terrorist?", among many other things. I said 'No" and they believed me.

well, I got a TSA letter for an 85 cent can of spray starch in my checked baggage, so I would say there is a pretty good bet you will get a letter...
FWIW, there is no shittier feeling than realizing you have screwed up on something like that...you are very lucky they let you leave...

and you may have just lost TSA precheck.

My answer would've been:
If I was a fricking terrorist, do you honestly think I'd try to sneak a gun on a plane with me?

I got put through additional screening one time because I told them I didn't have any liquids in my carry on... I had forgotten I had bought some roll on deodorant... It's embarrassing as hell when they walk up to you, ask questions, put on their butt inspection gloves, make you take out your shaving kit, and get you to roll your deodorant on their little strip of paper that detects whatever the frick terrorists use.
eta: My grandfather got taken to a room like you one time when he got on a cruise with a live .380 round... No gun, just one round. He was like look we can just toss this thing into the river and put an end to this shite, but they weren't going for that. They kept him for like two hours I think.

I'll be relieved if that's the only penalty. The TSA and local LEOs were as polite as could be during the whole process. I was glad they did not make a scene, or make an arrest for a boneheaded mistake.

Very true. But I think "attitude" has something to do with the way they end up treating you. I was a contrite MoFo this morning.

More than likely that's why you're here posting now. Glad you escaped unscathed.

All in all, I think they did a good job today. They found what they were supposed to find, they determined that I was an average citizen making a mistake rather than a terrorist/criminal, remained calm and reasonably respectful through the process, and got me back on my way to get most of a business day completed.
That is a mistake I will never make again, hopefully.
