Is it time to ban bicycles from public roads???

I have no dog in this fight and don't really care one way or the other but this issue has been blowing up the radio in New Orleans so I wanted to ask the OT. Bikers are required to obey the same traffic laws as drivers and yet they rarely do and are also almost never ticketed. Should bikers be required to ride only in areas with bike lanes? Should we allow them to use sidewalks and ban them from the roads? Whould things stay as they are?

I hate when there is a dedicated bike lane, yet there are cyclists who refuse to use it and continue to ride in road. There are 5 feet of painted and paved surface there for your use.

Depends. . . Are they smoking e-cigs on campus while riding the bike?

Well, he's right. A lot of people on bikes don't stop at stop signs or lights, don't signal turns, etc.
I would say cyclists are better at these things, but not everyone on the road on a bike is a cyclist.
ETA: Not saying he's right to ban bike from the road.

Rarely do? Or do you just notice the ones that do not?

How many cities in LA have bike lanes?

And when cyclists start using sidewalks, every mom in the state will start bitching when the cyclist come flying by them while they are trying to walk their dog.
Bicycles belong on the road. Deal with it.

Do you even ride a bike? Drivers of vehicles don't obey traffic laws either, should we ban automobiles too?

Cyclists know the risks. Drivers should be aware of cyclists. 99% of the time the two can co-exist. Natural selection will happen to 1% DWI.

We are probably still one of just a few states where you still have a considerable part of our population that still think like cavemen on alot of topics, so I guess the bike's on road issue shouldn't suprise me that there is still so much ignorance around here.

this has been discussed for 3 or 4 days straight now.

Nope. They should take the headphones out of their ears though if they know what's good for them.

I look at all of them as that is my job. I don't believe you are taking into consideration that the vast majority of riders are not triathletes on road bikes.

I made it clear in my OP that I really don't have an opinion one way or the other. I do deal with bikers every day and have no issues with them. I know many people do.

The police should just start ticketing them and requiring bike break tags
