It seems with the recent tragedy that some pundits / blogs are trying to connect this incident to the state of the LSU football program (bringing up recent issues with Brazil, Mathieu, Hill, Jefferson, etc.), even though the two men involved in this case are no longer student-athletes (the shooter being 13 years removed from LSU).

A thread like this has been started some time ago related to SEC programs and arrest numbers, but I thought I'd tie in to the discussion of the Jones shooting and update the stats.

Here's the number of arrest/citations from 2010 to date (per arrestnation.com):
Missouri - 20
Georgia - 19
Florida - 16
Tennessee - 16
TX A&M - 15
Ole Miss - 14
Arkansas - 13
Kentucky - 12
Alabama - 11
Auburn - 10
S. Carolina - 9
LSU - 6 (Mathieu not included b/c his arrest came post-LSU)
Miss St. - 6
Vandy - 3

The perception (in media and forums) seems to be that LSU leads the SEC in such incidents -- mainly due to the high profile cases (Hill, Jefferson, Mathieu), I suppose. But the facts seem to indicate otherwise.

These incidents are mostly related to the background of individual players and the people they hang out with, has little to do with the state of athletic program at a given school.

I agree. It's certainly stupid to tie these things to the state of a program. We could've had twice as many arrests and had we not lost Perriloux and Mathieu we'd probably have 2 more national championships.

But it is fun to see we're the best in the SEC (vandy players use Jedi mind tricks to explode cops brains before being arrested and there's nothing fun to do in Starkville so you might as well get arrested) and still hear that "Miles doesn't discipline".

I haven't read or seen any reputable places saying LSU is some kind of breeding ground for criminal activity like you're saying

Well....Rape is still worse than weed, speeding, and petty theft which is what most of these offenses are.

Qualifying it as "reputable", then you're most likely correct.

I've heard chatter, nonetheless, ... radio and blogs.

no. I will argue that that is YOUR perception of THE perception. other schools think THE perception is about their schools. the thing is that there really is no universal perception as perception really involves the complex elements of bias.

however, THE perception of college football (and basketball and pro football and basketball as well) is that thugs are welcome to play. what feeds this perception is fact; shootings, stabbings, rape, robbery, etc. There is an unusually high number of felony's committed by athletes of certain sports (football and basketball). this is FACT. just compare with other athletes and society as a whole. i'm simply stating facts not launching any tirades about anything. so call me a racist, call me an old cynic, call me anything you want. i'm not talking dui's here, i'm talking crimes against others and it happens everywhere in every program.

Numbers don't lie. There is to much respect gained on the street by participating in criminal/gang activity. Whether it's black, hispanic, or white these kids think it's cool to be outlaws or whatever.

Perception of perception of perception... on and on.

Point is national articles and news syndicates over the last five years have often used LSU as an example of high rate of such incidents. And certainly locally LSU has been represented as such. But the stats may show that LSU really isn't the "face" of such issues (though not from such occurrences)

If it says anything about LSU, it is that Miles is not afraid to put his SUPERSTARS ahead of anyone else. When you have high profile players being kicked off the team, it always draws more attention than the walk on who is kicked off the team.

Case in point, all the people who talked about Jefferson's suspension and the "Jefferson incident," but forget that Josh Johns was also investigated and suspended for the same event.
