CBO: Obamacare will have lower premiums, insure more, and cost government less
Posted by Eurocat on 4/14/14 at 11:53 am220
CBO: Obamacare will have lower premiums, insure more, and cost government less than projected.
* Relative to their previous projections made in February 2014, CBO and JCT now estimate that the ACA’s coverage provisions will result in lower net costs to the federal government: The agencies currently project a net cost of $36 billion for 2014, $5 billion less than the previous projection for the year; and $1,383 billion for the 2015–2024 period, $104 billion less than the previous projections.
* Health insurance premiums are lower than CBO originally projected, saving the government $190 billion;
* "12 million more nonelderly people will have health insurance in 2014 than would have had it in the absence of the ACA;"
* The number of uninsured will fall to 30 million by 2017 and will remain there through 2024, absent other reforms;
* The projection made originally in 2012 that the ACA would reduce the deficit is still valid, and deficit reduction is greater than anticipated two years ago.

We did all of this horseshite and still end up with a perpetual 30 million uninsured?
shite a brick and then frick me with it!
Wasn't there something like 37 separate "postponed" mandates? Will those have an effect?

What about individual citizens? Many had there costs skyrocket.
I am not opposed to ACA based upon "cost" alone. But, I think it is government overreach.

CBO is non partisan. And not controlled by the Dems. They routinely come out with stuff that obama administration doesn't like.
As far as gov't goes, the CBO does good analysis although probably not as thorough as other NGOs.

good news, although... doc fix.
also, fwiw on those plans (i hope enrollees aren't surprised by this, pp 7-8):

Effects of the Characteristics of Exchange Plans. The plans being offered through exchanges in 2014 appear to have, in general, lower payment rates for providers, narrower networks of providers, and tighter management of their subscribers’ use of health care than employment-based plans do.12 Those features allow insurers that offer plans through the exchanges to charge lower premiums (although they also make plans somewhat less attractive to potential enrollees).

What do they mean fall to? Wasn't 30M the key number used as the reason we needed obamacare?
Who sponsored the study?
The CBO is just a giant calculator. They crunch the numbers they are given. I have no doubt the number are accurate but I would like to know the parameters of the study first.

Of the data they are fed and by the parameters set by those asking for their review.
Unfortunately, those projections will once again change next year.. Do you at least find it funny that the cbo is changing the projections year to year based on delays and administrator changes.. I find the whole idea of the cbo laughable as a true indicator of future cost because they are fed a different story nearly every quarter. The reality is the cbo is full of smart people who do good work for a bunch fools..
I love these 30,000 feet "Obamacare is the magic elixir that only gets better" discussions.
Meanwhile, at ground level we pretend that millions of middle class Americans won't be devastated by their increased premiums, and that this won't devastate personal savings, retirement saving and the entire middle class consumer economy.
Great tree you got there. But did you notice the 50,000,000 acre forest behind it?

Which government? Federal or State? Would imagine Federal going down as a result of medicaid coverage increasing.
Would be interested in seeing how their projections for 2014 worked out from 2010 / 2011. Anyone have any historical perspective on how accurate their projections are?

I think they are right about costing the gov less once the people they lied about caring for begin to die from it at an alarming pace. With less people and the fact they collect more taxes in the name of health care will make those liberal dems richer.
The number of uninsured would fall well below 30 million of 24 states expanded their Medicaid programs. That was the plan all along to get the unisured number of folks really down. Texas alone could get one million people insured if they just expanded like 26 other states have done.

Show me one forecast made by the CBO that has been right. I'll wait patiently.
