Water issue at my Apartment

I'm in my early 20s and just signed a lease at a new place. When I first turned my shower on there was an awful sulfide contamination, sewage smell etc. that stained the bath brown and made the entire apartment smell like shite.I asked them if they would fix it and all they did was add a shitton of bleach to the water which burned my eyes and skin
The thing is there are several reports of them doing this. They "provide" the water with the rent. Do I have any legal abilities in this matter? Called them several times and they just repeat the same ol "it's just city water" bs..Cheap bastards

You need to tell your landlord to change the sacrificial anode in the water heater.
It's a really simple fix, when it goes out, your water gets a sulfuric smell.

Ok
The thing is that they constantly evade the issue and I can't take a shower at my place without me and the bathroom smelling like straight bleach. Guess I'm wondering if they do not address it, is legal action an option?
I would just want out of my lease and money back

My friend, if you're paying cash money, there is always a legal option.

Do you live in New Orleans? Doesn't the water come from the river there?

I imagine if you threatened legal action they would stand firm at first but cave eventually as no Judge or attorney in their right mind would force someone to stay in an apartment they are paying good money for with a bathroom they can't even use.
What you need to do though is find out if homes in the surrounding area have the same issues. I say this because I have seen some areas of certain towns have their whole water supply smell like rotten eggs and it had nothing to do with water heaters or plumbing issues. It's just how that part of town was/is.
ETA: There are filters you can find to reduce the smell and help a whole lot but they are expensive and I wouldn't buy one just for an apartment I was renting.

Nope long beach ms
It's not just a "bad smell", it smells like straight sewage. Several complaints on google about said complex

If it's a sewage smell and not a rotten egg odor then the anode fix above probably isn't the answer.
Sounds like they may have other plumbing issues they could be hiding. They might even already know what it is and don't want to foot the bill to fix it since plumbing is so expensive.
Call the local health department and complain or ask them who you need to complain to. Hopefully an inspection will ensue and you can either use it to get out of your lease or they will be forced to resolve it.

Sounds like someone tossed the name of the apt complex into the google search box a bit too late

Thanks
Like I said I've complained three times and no resolution. Just want out really if they can't be competent managers and fix a glaring issue and/or try to cover it up

I would send a certified letter with your request to start with and start on a paper trail if I were you.
I would call the sanitation department too like I mentioned earlier.

With good results, people have gone to the local news station in Hattiesburg about similar apartment problems. If you're not getting the resolution you want from speaking with the apartment manager/owner and through legal means, a third option might be to forward a few news links to them and threaten to take it public.
Chances are, I'm guessing, they'd rather tear up your lease than go through the headache of dealing with you.

Google Elisa Lam...may be helpful in your situation.

Don't just break your lease or you will be asking for trouble. They could sue you for breach of the lease or send it to collections and have them hounding you for the money. You can end up trashing your credit.
Stout's advice is good, be sure to put it in writing and send it certified if they have been playing games with you. Calling and telling the management over the phone about the problem does not mean anything because they can deny your claims and you will not be able to prove you gave them notice. Calling the local governmental agency like the health dept. or local housing inspector, etc. is a good idea if you have given them a reasonable chance to take care of the problem, if there really happens to be a defect that makes the place unsafe or violates code.
I guess I am wondering how they would have made the water smell like bleach. How would that happen?
