A City of Atlanta firefighter was killed Friday morning while training for a triathlon in New Orleans.

Sgt. Frank Guinn was riding his bicycle with two others, including his brother-in-law, when he was struck by a car, Janet Ward, spokeswoman for the Atlanta fire department, said Friday night. Guinn, 36, died at the scene of the wreck, which critically injured his brother-in-law, Ward said. The third cyclist was not injured.

The three bicyclists were training for the Ironman competition being held in New Orleans on Sunday at the time of the wreck. The wreck happened around 10:15 a.m., Central time, on the eastbound side of U.S. 90, New Orleans police said.

I'd say it is. Road bikes very seldom have gear switches on the aero bars.

You're probably right.

Can I ask a question? Why do we want cyclists riding in the same direction as automobile traffic?

It was "NOLA bike to work day" two days ago.

I'm scared to ride a bike in this town.

because it would cause all kinds of a clusterfrick if cyclists went opposite of traffic on roads

ever make a right hand turn without checking to your right? 95% of the ime I bet you only look left for oncoming trafic before turning right.

That's a pretty dangerous stretch to be on a bike. Very little shoulder.

I guess I just worry about instances like this. What scares me about it is a cyclist can't see an inattentive driver from behind.

Yeah, you're right. I just wish there were more bike paths.

Someone around here will probably end up knowing these folks. The racing/tri community is small and generally kind of tight knit.

Prayers for their families.

I'm trying to get my wife and I in that habit more. Sad, but I wasn't as aware of that potentially deadly mistake I was making so often until we moved to Houston area.

Sadder being that I'm a runner and am good friends with lots of bikers.

I've been wondering that for years. I'm not even comfortable walking on a sidewalk the same direction as traffic. I want to see what's coming.

see...this is why bike lanes are dangerous

people don't check to their right, and when in a bike lane, bikers think they are safe, lots of accidents occur when cars turn right across bike lanes without checking

on a normal road, the biker should not be overtaking the car to the inside right anyways, that drives me nuts when I see other bikers doing that

There would be no tension between cyclists and motorists if the cyclists weren't such little penises about it. Seriously, the conversations I have with cyclists are pretty tense and senselessly confrontational, despite the fact that I support most of their goals.

But, down here, cyclists tend to be pissy liberals who are looking to be enraged to begin with. They need to pick different spokespeople.

Terrible new, but I'm surprised there aren't more accidents out that way. Chef is a heavily cycled stretch and also driven by a bunch of dimwits driving 80.
