Monday night, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department accidentally shot and killed a production assistant for Tosh.0 after mistaking the 30-year-old for a stabbing suspect.
According to the Los Angeles Times, John Winkler went to a neighbor's apartment Monday night to try to help three people who were being held captive at knife point. Responding police shot Winkler when he ran from the apartment with one of the victims. From the Sheriff Department's statement:
As deputies continued attempts to contact the people in the apartment, the apartment door suddenly opened and a male victim came rushing out. He was covered in blood and bleeding profusely from the neck. Simultaneously, Victim Winkler ran out of the door, lunging at the back of the fleeing victim. Both ran directly at the deputies. Winkler was similar to the description of the suspect and was wearing a black shirt. Believing Winkler was the assailant and the assault was ongoing and he would attack the entry team; three deputies fired their duty weapons at him.
Winkler was shot once and died later that night at a local hospital.
One of Winkler's friends spoke to the Los Angeles Times after the shooting. "It's just a really sad story," Devin Richardson said, adding that Winkler had just moved to L.A. six months ago from Washington state to pursue a career as a producer. "He basically went to help some neighbors and ends up getting shot."
The suspect, 27-year-old, Alexander McDonald, was eventually arrested and charged with one count of murder, two counts of attempted murder, and one count of torture.

Wonder if there's any footage of this.

That's a really weird story. Why run at the police?

Probably thought he was running to safety.

Stupidest question ever man. They thought they were safe and had just saved their lives by escaping this guy. They saw the police which would equate to safety in this situation and were trying to get to them to stay safe, I don't imagine they would have any inclination the cops would hurt them in that scenario

Everybody needs to wake up to the reality - the cops can be counted on to overreact and do the wrong thing - just as likely as not.
I guess it would have been too much trouble to assess the situation before just blazing away. But, in all honesty, they'd much rather err on the side of killing an innocent than risk having "one of their own" get hurt.

It was a knife attack, why the guns? Tazer? Why all 3 shot? This just stinks.

Not by Winkler - he was an unarmed good guy.

why the guns
They literally cannot wait to kill a human being (and a dog will do on many days) with that shiny pistol.

Tazer?
They usually only do that when the guy/gal is on the ground - as a punishment.

Why all 3 shot?
Cowards, I guess - bad shooting ones, too.

Spot fricking on.
So long as the "I go home at the end of my shift.." mentality stays intact and prevalent, this is what will happen with cops.

I bet they get tried for murder in California.

Fantastic cop bashing troll. Nicely done.
Can't this just be a shitty situation all around? I'm not saying this innocent dude should've died, but if you were called to a scene where an ACTIVE knifing assault was taking place, and someone matching the description of the suspect jumps out and runs directly at you, what would you do in those few seconds?
We don't know all of the details of what happened, but to immediately say "frick the cops because they just can't WAIT to kill people" is fricking stupid.
ETA: I thought this was gonna somehow be in conjunction with Tosh.0, like they were filming a skit or something like that. Sad situation all around.

I wonder how many funny comments he will make in 20 seconds.

A. Determine if he's a threat (i.e. does he have a knife or a gun)
B. Take control of the situation regardless.

I'm just going by the evidence I have - I've seen way too many videos (and they know they're being recorded) - of cops shooting dogs they have no business shooting, tasing handcuffed suspects, beating handcuffed suspects, etc.
I remain a supporter of law enforcement, generally, but when you're given a badge and a gun, and entrusted with the public's safety, when you make a mistake in which an innocent dies, there better be a damned good reason for it.
There doesn't appear to be a good reason in this case.
I don't fully blame the line officers - they have been conditioned to view all of us as threats - the traffic stop videos they're shown, etc.
Again - the report was a knifing - if this innocent had been carrying a knife and run at the cops - maybe - had he gone to rescue the victim with a gun - maybe - however, without evidence of him being armed - that's manslaughter right there.
If there continues to be no consequences, innocent people will continue to be killed by law enforcement.

What ever happened to cops tasering people?
Posted on 4/11/14 at 8:39 am to Ace Midnight
I don't have any details besides what's right here but this doesn't seem like a case where the cops acted outrageously.
