Gooch comeback?

He's gone 90 minutes in 12 games for Sheffield Wednesday since joining them in January and, by all accounts, he has been their best centerback.
Can he become a darkhorse World Cup candidate considering our largely unsettled backline?

Admittedly, I haven't seen any of his recent games, but I'm all for giving him another shot. Omar looked bad the other night. He won't be able to keep up with some of the attacking players we'll face in the group stage.

I mean why not let him try to play himself in.
I used to be a Gonzo fan, but dude is down right bad. All that size and ability but he doesn't have it upstairs whatsoever. Probably good he never went to Europe. At 25 he is about to pass his window to go abroad anyway. I really have not seen his game progress from the flashes of what could be.
Gooch playing in the Championship already will have him well versed in parking the bus, if we need to

I think at this point, you have to bring in both Brooks and Gooch into the prelim camp just to see if either one potentially steps up.

He can barely move. The one thing I've notice from briefly watching The Championship in England is that many clubs still rely on big, slow English center-forwards. I'm sure Gooch can still battle with Grant Holt fairly well. I don't trust him against Asamoah Gyan and Mesut Özil.

Gooch wasn't terrible in that game, Brooks was the culprit for most of the bad things that happened.

I agree that Brooks had the most glaring, and costly, mistakes against Ukraine. But if we're being perfectly honest, the entire starting 11 was in complete disarray. It would be extremely difficult for me to single out one player.
On the other hand, it's also hard for me to put any stock into that match. It was, essentially, a brand new 11, playing against an emotionally fueled Ukraine in front of approximately 200 Cypriots.
Just for reference, I went back and reviewed the NY Times player ratings.

Player ratings are so subjective, though. For reference, ESPN, MLSsoccer.com & ASN all rated Gooch higher.
From that game, I just recall Brooks lagging back while the rest of backline played high and it cost us dearly. I don't think either of those goals were the result of Gooch being too slow.

I fully agree that player ratings are subjective. My larger point was that the whole team, Gooch included, was abysmal in the Ukraine match.
So, it's a bit silly to single out a player like Brooks. Gooch was bad, Brooks was bad, Klejstan was bad, Dempsey was bad, they all sucked.
