Another reason the salary cap and MLS owning all the contracts needs to go. The system has some flaws.

Because the ownership of those teams choose to have three (the max) DPs.

Each team can have three DPs if they want them - they just have to pay them.

The salary cap could probably use a push upwards for those players at the very bottom, but recognizable names are making very, very decent money now. They'd go elsewhere otherwise.

Clint Dempsey is making a shite ton of money. There are a lot of teams with a collection of players making really solid money.

And yet still only one third of what Fernando Torres makes.

yea its really only what 4 teams

That chart comparing SKC to Cruz Azul is telling.

The cap keeps the league competitive but scares away top end players in their prime. Let the teams who are serious about winning spend whatever and bring in whoever. It will force the lower end clubs to get with the program or become basement dwellers for a long time.

I really can't wait till one of the MLS clubs with a top academy has a core group all come up together and just wreck shop then sell them all off to europe

nah but the fair play is a joke

Man City is already trying to circumvent the rule by adding seats that will never be used.

It's just transfermarkt market values.

Sure it does. The league doesn't need to be blowing their wad because they absolutely cannot make it back.

It does to a reasonable extent. Toronto FC has destroyed teams with their DPs, but the DP limits are stringent enough to encourage things like Columbus sticking with Wil Trapp, which is crucial.

I wouldn't blame them. You could get 90k in the stadium for a really good team in the US. However, it's going to be fricking retarded because TV revenue is always going to be hard to get without pedigree versus foreign leagues, and as seen with the Premier League, TV revenue trumps all.

Maybe Dempsey, Bradley, and Donovan should team up and buy Chivas USA. They could be player owners like Will Ferrel in Semi Pro.

I think the way that things are done here is smart for the league given how young it is. We don't need another NASL fiasco. Don Garber has done a good job of promoting slow, steady growth within the league. Let's not get too carried away.

Europe needs a salary cap. Obviously it's harder to institute because of Champions League play, but as long as we have the "haves" and the "have nots" then we will continue to see clubs like PSG that can be bought out and instantly start butt ramming their domestic league and competing in the CL, competitively, too.

I'm surprised the Europeans, with how their social systems work, wouldn't be more into this idea of financial equality.

The numbers are misleading because it doesn't take into account the allocation money, retention funds, etc.

the MLS is in a weird stage where some of the clubs are growing much faster than the league as a whole. It's too soon to ditch the cap because that will kill half the league but it's also starting to be an outdated economic model. We'll see what kind of solutions they come up with in the next CBA.

It is a great irony that our sports are for the most part extremely socialist and theirs are as free market as it gets.
