Why not 19th wheel?

Third is proper. It has no partner either.

I thought 3rd wheel was referring to a 3rd person tagging along with a couple.

Third wheel when referring to people, fifth wheel for goosenecks.

Unless there are two couples and one odd man out, then fifth wheel

Fifth wheel is a real practical everyday thing. A third wheel is an unwanted unsturdy piece if shite. You pass fifth wheels everytime you pass an 18-wheeler or camper.

Not to burst your bubble but fifth wheels and goosenecks are only similar in the fact that neither are bumper pull. Not that it makes a shite.
