SS, Treasury target hundreds of thousands of taxpayers for parents’ debts

A few weeks ago, with no notice, the U.S. government intercepted Mary Grice’s tax refunds from both the IRS and the state of Maryland. Grice had no idea that Uncle Sam had seized her money until some days later, when she got a letter saying that her refund had gone to satisfy an old debt to the government — a very old debt.
When Grice was 4, back in 1960, her father died, leaving her mother with five children to raise. Until the kids turned 18, Sadie Grice got survivor benefits from Social Security to help feed and clothe them.
Now, Social Security claims it overpaid someone in the Grice family — it’s not sure who — in 1977. After 37 years of silence, four years after Sadie Grice died, the government is coming after her daughter

The Treasury Department has intercepted $1.9 billion in tax refunds already this year, said Jeffrey Schramek, assistant commissioner of the department’s debt management service. The aggressive effort to collect old debts started three years ago — the result of a single sentence tucked into the farm bill lifting the 10-year statute of limitations on old debts to Uncle Sam

Our money or proprty is not ours as the government can take whatever they want whenever they want and there is little to nothing we can do about it.

On May 14, 2008, the House passed the conference agreement on the 2008 farm bill (H.R. 2419, The Food, Conservation, and Energy Act of 2008) by a vote of 318-106. The next day, the Senate passed the same bill by a vote of 81-15. Concurrently, on May 14, both the House and Senate passed, by voice vote, the final temporary extension of current law lasting until the earlier of May 23, 2008, or the date the 2008 farm bill was signed into law. On May 21, the Bush Administration vetoed the legislation. Both the House and the Senate voted to override the veto, and the conference bill became law on May 22, 2008 (P.L. 110-234). However, an enrolling error resulted in one title of the bill (Title III, Trade) being omitted from the version that was sent to the White House, and the newly enacted law contains 14 of 15 farm bill titles. To resolve this issue, both the House and Senate passed a version of the 2008 farm bill with all 15 original bill titles (H.R. 6124). The President vetoed this bill version on June 18, but both the House and Senate voted to override the veto that same

Social Security officials refused to discuss Grice’s or any other case, even with the taxpayer’s permission. But Clark said the agency is “sensitive to concerns about our attempts to arrange repayment of overpayments.” She said that before taking any money, Social Security makes “multiple attempts to contact debtors via the U.S. Mail and by phone.”
Grice, who works for the Food and Drug Administration and lives in Takoma Park, in the same apartment she’s resided in since 1984, never got any notice about a debt.
Social Security officials told her they had sent their notice to her post office box in Roxboro, N.C. Grice rented that box from 1977 to 1979 and never since. And Social Security has Grice’s current address: Every year, it sends her a statement about her benefits.
Dear God.

So its actually Bush's fault.

No. It's a Democratic led Congress' fault, as they overrode Bush's veto of it.
eta- taking that was sarcasm I missed.

Question. If the farm bill that allows this process was passed in 2008, what is this all about?:
That's 2011.

Nothing surprises me anymore with this administration. At what point do the pitch forks and torches come out?

I think I've got it figured out. The 2008 farm bill didn't specifically install this process, it merely removed the 10 year statute of limitations on debts owed to the Feds.
In 2011, Obama's Treasury Dept. actually put the specific process into place using the thing in the 2008 farm bill as a spring board to go digging back decades for proposed debtors.
Sooooo....
It really is Obama.

This is one of the most disturbing things I've read on this site. This is something I will share with friends, family, and my representatives.

If the govt can prove that Joe Kennedy avoided taxes in his prohibition bootlegging operations and can put a number on it, can the govt now seize all those Kennedy trusts to pay the taxes owed.
