You deserve a big heartfelt thank you.

I have trouble seeing children suffer through illness, abuse, or injury. That's the one thing that breaks me emotionally. Children shouldn't suffer. My heart aches when the innocence of childhood is disrupted by pain.

It takes a very emotionally strong and dedicated individual to work with suffering children day in and day out.

Thank you.

I have a buddy that went to St. Jude in Memphis one time and he said if you don't cry after being in that place, you don't have a soul. I couldn't take seeing sick children every day. It takes a special kind of person to do those jobs.

Exactly.

When you have children, "the fear" always exists in the back of your mind. You'll always fear for your children's safety and health.

Dammit, I'm tearing up just thinking about it.

Good night.

I don't think I have the heart to be able to do that. It would just wear you down to the point of hating your life.

Takes a special person to do that and they should be thanked and admired

Pay those people whatever they demand. People who criticize doctors for making too much money should perhaps seriously contemplate whether or not they could emotionally handle the job before casting stones.

I truly love my job. I get a satisfaction from my job that is more than a paycheck. I'm trusted by scared parents, who feel helpless, to care for their child when they are in a very vulnerable state.

And nothing makes a crazy night at work better than a heartfelt thanks from a parent or child.

And that's amazing. I'm so happy there are people like you I just don't know if I could deal with the heartache. I'm sure it gives great satisfaction also. Just makes me sick that kids like that can be so sick and not have a chance

I also work on an acute peds floor. I don't care for pediatric oncology patients. I agree, takes a special person.

Many of my patients are in the hospital cause they had to get their appendix out or they broke their leg or their asthma was acting up. Many are otherwise healthy and that will likely be the only hospitalization they have as a child.

We do see chronic kids and some seriously sad social issues(quite a lot at the hospital I work at actually).

Yep, instantly became my number one fear, and really isn't even in the running with other fears anymore, except maybe fear of not being able to provide for them/dying before they grow up.

Had to tell a parent of a five year old the other day that child likely has a brain tumor. It's tough, but you learn how to keep emotions detached.

Was one time in Ochsner 7th floor heart care unit. There was a 12 year old girl there too that was waiting on a heart transplant. It ate me up seeing sure a young person in need, but she did get up and walked around with the wife and I at times.

On a side note, she got a new heart. I was told that she is doing real good and thanks to the family that donated a heart to this child.

One of my friend's lost their 14 month old son recently. He had hirschsprung and cchs so there was lots of time in the hospital for the first year of his life. They are an amazing family and will accept it eventually (never understand it probably).

The nurses that cared for him came to the funeral. That tells you how much they care.
