So the wife, kids, and mother-in-law thought it would be a great idea to load up (think Beverly Hillbillies sans the truck and shotgun) and hop on over to Costa Rica for a week. I've never been, but for some reason my wife thinks I'm some local tour guide and keeps hounding me on where to go (give me a map, blindfold, and dart, and I can pick some place quickly.) Anyway, she is torn between Manuel Antonio and Tamarindo. My own personal hobbies include surfing, offshore fishing and staying as far away from my wife and mother-in-law as possible (it's a vacation, and I only get 1-2 of these per year). So I'm leaning toward Tamarindo. But per wifey, Manuel Antonio is "more peaceful, has inland fishing and we can get a villa with full amenities instead of a hotel". Anyone have any thoughts who could help a brotha out (preferably someone who has been further south than Grand Isle Block 43, ideally, someone who has actually been to the country). Thanks in advance.

I stayed 3 days in Manuel Antonio during my 10 day honeymoon to Costa Rica

Loved it there. Manuel Antonio natural park is gorgeous as well. Quepos...which is the town next door...looked like a cool little town. Not overly Americanized either.

Tamarindo is like Panama city beach compared to Manuel Antonio, which is chill. You can find offshore fishing charters an hour north of MA.

Oh and there are TONS of monkeys in Manuel Antonio. Kids will like that. We would be at the pool and these cute squirrel monkeys walking around everywhere (one tried to steal a woman's drink by the pool)

Sounds like your marriage has about two more years in it, tops.

Only during tourist season, which is during our winter months. I spent two weeks down there last summer and it was empty. I spent two weeks surfing and it was as laid back & quiet as can be.

Vacation sex is the best when married. Now, staying away from MIL, well I can see that one, let her watch the kids !

I haven't been to tamarindo but manual antonio was lovely. But it wasn't exactly free of tourists.

Have you looked into drake's bay? Corcovado is right there, and its amazing. You can slide over to the gulf de dulce. The fishing is supposedly amazing.

Its still real touristy though.

If you want really not touristy, go to puerto viejo on the carribean coast. Or puerto jimenez on the pacific coast.

We're going at end of May (which I believe is just starting to get into rainy season.) With kids in school and baseball, it's the only time we could go.

Again, thanks for your and everyone else's suggestions - very helpful.

Only problem is that everything is so brown. November is the best time, imo. It's just at the end of the rainy season and everything is very lush & green.

Everything was very green when we went. We went to Monteverde(lush green rainforests up in the mountains), La Fortuna(green), and Manuel Antonio (very green).

its amazing. We are debating going again in the fall. We did costa rica 2x, and nicaragua. We had a blast each time, and very affordable.

one time we rented a house with a private beach. AWESOME!

we might do honduras, or as a fallback go to FL.
