I've got quite a few ant piles around the yard, and just got finished giving them a good dusting of poison.

Should I be worried that my dog will try to eat the stuff, or do they generally stay away from it?

Did you use poison or bait? The pyrethroids Talstar, Bugbuster, Turf Ranger) aren't going to do anything but stuff like acephate is a organophosphate which is a neurotoxin.

They may try baits but I seriously doubt they'd go after straight pesticides.

My golden retriever ate ant poison and I'm sure this is what caused his ultimately fatal health problems.

my bassett ate probably 1 cup of the stuff a couple of years back. Started walking around in circles and acting really drunk. Took her to the emergency vet and forked over $500 to have her stomach pumped full of charcoal. Once she vomited it all up, she was fine.

This dog has also, however, eaten an entire chicken carcass, full pans of brownies, aluminum foil, crayons, tampons, dirty diapers and anything else you can imagine. I think she's the antichrist.

My boxer did. That was an expensive vet bill.

It was some of this stuff...

I've been keeping an eye on her, and so far she doesn't seem to be interested in it.

Dogs eat their own shite........so I wouldn't put any poison by them.

I've put it out in my yard and the dogs have never touched it but I had a few young pups get in a bag and it killed them.

So far so good. She was running around in the yard all afternoon, and never gave the ant piles any attention (that I saw). As usual, she was totally focused on the bird and tree rats.

Thanks for the replies.

ETA: How well does Talstar work on ant piles?

My dog will eat any damn thing he finds - grass, sticks, vomit, dirt, whatever. I'm sure ant poison would be like ice cream to him.

Water it in per instructions. Dogs will not fool wit it. They prefer it DRY...........

Nah, they won't eat that. It is water soluble though so you can water it in. Or mix some with water then drench mounds.

EDIT: I know the label says not to water in but I've found it to work just as well when it's rained the same day I've applied it.
