quote:

he first so-called “smart gun” has hit the shelves at U.S. retail outlets, including one of the biggest firearms stores in California, according a news report.

The Smart System iP1, a .22-caliber pistol made by the German gun-maker Armatix GmbH, can only function with an accompanying wristwatch, which is sold separately, according to an article by Michael Rosenwald of The Washington Post.

When the RFID-equipped watch is activated by a PIN number and placed near the gun — like when a shooter grips the handle — it sends a signal to unlock the gun and a light on the back of the weapon turns green, according to the report. Otherwise, the firearm stays locked and the light on the back remains red, it stated.

If a gun store decides to sell this pistol, they are basically signing their own death certificate. I refuse to shop anywhere that sells bullshite like this and I'm sure other gun owners share the same sentiment.

Hopefully you aren't getting mugged for your watch. Then pistol whipping is your only option.

This concept has been around for a while. It's never caught on for a reason.

I'm pretty sure if you pistol whipped someone in public, youd get to go to jail too.

Definitely in California. I think the only legal weapon there is a rape whistle.

Could potentially be dangerous. We should pass some sort of feel good legislation restricting its use and require it be sold with a child proofing device.

it would be a way to keep your kids from shooting themselves or someone else with it, which is more likely than it being used to defend yourself.

no, I don't want it, but why would you care if someone did?

That is exactly what I thought. Here is your gun but you cannot use it unless you by this additional $400 watch. What a scam.

How could your wife or child use the weapon in an emergency when you're away? Seems they're the ones who need it most.

Which can be just as effectively accomplished with a $50 steel box. You are also wrong about the later part of your statement.

Since you aren't very well sorted with the context behind this pistol or the company that makes it it should suffice to say that the market had already spoken on these types of guns and it's more about using the gov't to create the market by fiat.

Considering it isn't required ATM why would a gun owner want to own a gun like this? I don't understand it especially for the ridiculous price
