Last Wednesday, at the request of redshirt sophomore shooting guard Derrick Gordon, University of Massachusetts men’s basketball head coach Derek Kellogg called a team meeting. Two weeks after his team's upset loss to Tennessee in the NCAA tournament, Gordon had a secret he wanted to share with them, one that in a week’s time he would share with the world: He’s gay. No active male athlete in Division 1 college basketball, football, baseball or hockey had ever said those words publicly. After years of waiting for someone else to break the barrier, Gordon wasn’t going to wait any longer.

So how many athletes have to come out before they aren't "breaking the barrier" anymore?

I called a team meeting in college to announce that I'm straight.

Apparently a lot of people. People are outraged by it, inspired by it or often care so little about it that they can't wait to tell everyone how little they care. If it wasn't something that people talked about or had opinions on, these stories wouldn't exist.

I look forward to the day where someone's sexual preference is a complete non-factor and people ACTUALLY don't care. It's ridiculous.

Was he locked up in chains and stuffed in a canvass sack? It was big news when Houdini did it but that was a long time ago and the closet was full of water.

Just read the first part of the article. Very confusing wording at some points. Is the head coach gay too?
quote:

University of Massachusetts men’s basketball head coach Derek Kellogg called a team meeting...

Kellogg regaled the men with talk about the importance of diversity. Everyone on the team comes from a different background, he said; everyone brings something different to the court. Then, Kellogg broke the ice.

"I just wanted you all to know," Kellogg said, "I'm gay."

Then it goes on to talk about the player coming out...

Yeah, that was weird. And a weird (and seems almost disrepectful) thing to do with the team with a player that is gay.
