Anyone have any insight on Nike (NKE)? I am considering investing $1,000 and holding long. I am an amateur investor and just wondering if anyone had any thoughts on this company. What would you consider to be a good purchase price?

NKE-Yahoo Finance

I presently hold positions in Visa, Intel, Ericsson, and Exxon. I want to add something different to my portfolio.

NIKE is a solid company. I have also been looking to take a lonog postion in the company. IT's a company with solid growth year over year and likes to split which keeps the share price attractive.

Thanks for the insight. In your opinion, what would you think would be a good price to get in at?

Nike is a beast. That is the next stock I plan on getting into when I can free up enough cash to put in. They are a global brand with a presence in every area of life. I know Christmas 2012 they had their 7th split in company history, where stock holders got a split from $104 a share to $52 a share, and it is back up to mid $70's just over a year later. I would get in because they are such a solid company. Also, I remember reading something about how Nike grew 16% during 2008, which really says something about them. I would jump in although the question of "what do they do next?" does not have an immediate answer, Nike always seems to have an answer for positive growth.

ETA: As far as good price to get in, that is up for debate. I have watched that stock continuously grow over the past year and a half, so anytime would be a good time. It was up to $80 a share and has come back down to $72, which to me is a decent entrance price. Maybe wait until the market pulls back, but that may be tomorrow or it may be 2 years from now. Are you looking to invest now? If so, the price now is not a bad one.

Buy & hold. Initiate a position and keep adding to it. Great idea. I just entered it.

I would get in today. They have taken a dip over the last month or so and should be flying higher soon.

People will always need shoes. Also when your name brand becomes synonymous with the generic product, you've won.

"I need a new pair of Nike's."
"Oh look I snotted. Please give me a Kleenex."
"I'm out of Scotch tape."

Companies don't get promoted to the Dow 30 for kicks.
BUY BUY BUY and HOLD.

CNBC had a big debate on Nike yesterday... All the analysts agreed the best days are behind them even though they own 50% of the shoe market. They are def involved in other things, but they aren't the cool/hip thing in the footwear world anymore.

They equated it to

70/80's = Chucks were the big thing
90s/early 00's = Nike was the big thing
00's - Under Armour is the big thing now

I really like UA. The sports retail segment was ripe for the picking with Nike dominating. UA is still relatively a smaller player, but the growth they have managed has been impressive. They are starting to cut into professional leagues, especially in the shoe area. Follow the money trail there.

Nice, I'm doing a big marketing project on UA right now. I've always been a fan of the company from a business standpoint. Huge Kevin Plank fan.

UA is another great play but more on the growth side than growth + div.

Really you should probably play both if you're bullish on athletic wear & all that surrounds it.

Nike has Jordan, LeBron, and KD, all of which sell at ridiculous rates as they are 3 of the largest sports icons stateside. But then you they have lines and deals in soccer, golf, baseball, football, track and field, and causual/fashion wear on top of basketball (may be venturing into a local BR baseball company sometime down the line). Nike stock really took off once they secured the rights to the NFLs onfield and apparel deal and they have done a great job with it. But Nike goes well beyond the sports realm. It has infiltrated the hip hop and pop culture scene. Could UA get to that sort of diverse global status? Maybe. But will it be to the extent of Nike? Probably not. I just do not see the new kid on the block taking over for the originator.

ETA: The Jordan fad will fade over time, but where that declines, I see the Lebron and KD market inclining. That with Nikes superior soccer line, which is a global sport/market, leads me to believe Nike is not going anywhere.

I see your point but I'm a college student and not one person I know wears UA shoes.

Only time I ever see UA shoes is when they have a contract with a school and they force the athletes to wear them. Nobody freaks out when the latest UA shoe comes out, but people still pay 200 for Jordans.

Another thing to consider is Nike's strong Track & Field presence. As long as they are the #1 choice for track athletes, normal people will always want them to run.

Also Nike is a lot like Rolex when it comes to marketing. They have a strong brand that is plastered everywhere at big time sporting events and they drop top dollar to have the biggest names wearing their gear.

I just can't see anyone passing Nike anytime soon. Their contracts with the big schools and the NFL insure stability for a while IMO.

eta: UA is a good company but they aren't passing Nike unless they develop a shoe people want. UA will always have the best dri-fit shirts. I think they both are solid.

You must have never been to Ole Miss try and find a girl not wearing nike shorts, nike shoes etc. Under Armour has great gear but atrocious shoes seriously they look horrible and are crap longevity wise. If I wanted to get in the athletic segment it would be Nike or Lululemon.

You don't need UA to pass up Nike to make a bunch of money. I don't think anyone here thinks they will pass up Nike in the next 20 years. Its just a growth stock v Nike which won't get too much bigger.
