I have been in a thread on the OT about dogs and made me want to seek advice.

My baby boy has been saving his money to buy a Catahoula Cur. He is eleven and has saved up $400 for another dog. Does anyone know any good breeders with non-crazy dogs? I have found Catahoulas are hit or miss. Either super sweet or bat shite crazy.

We have owned blackmouths and been around a lot of mountains. I am trying to push him in that direction but little terd wants a Catahoula.

I don't know any right now but they can have a mean streak. I just put down my 14 yr old cur a few months ago and he was great around my kids. That being said, he was about 10 yrs old before I had kids and he had mellowed a lot. He was tough to break and I had to maintain the upper had for a few years off and on so I didn't want another now to start over with small kids. I think you are right to be cautious.
Best advice I can give is spend some time with the parents when you do find someone.

That is why I am leaning BMC. A mountain is high strung and bite that arse for shits and giggles also.

Never had one but it was high on my list. I just can't seem to buy a good dog for very much money. I've spent as much as 900 and always get the idiots. Best two dogs I've had were either mutt or $25

I promise if he gets a BMC from good stock it will be the best dog he has ever had or been around. Let him have the responsibility of feeding and caring for the dog and by the time that pup is two years old they will have a bond only death could break.

If the time comes that you need to discipline him after the dog is grown you might want to kennel the dog first

I have had a Ladner BMC before. Awesome little gyp. Poor baby was killed when I was breeding her. Super sweet but protective of property and family. 55lbs of bad arse little dog.

These folks usually have some fine dogs. They are Catahoula's for the most part and I don't know how often they have pups. Always heard good things about them.

My catahoula is just over 3 and is just now starting to mellow a little. It's been a rough 3 years. He's excellent with the kids even though they use him like a jungle gym. When he gets tired he just gets up and walks away from them. He is spastic though. When I get home it's 20 mintues straight of bounceing and jumping and barking.

A lot of different things to know about a Catahoula. You don't need $400 and you can get a good dog. I have had registered and otherwise and the registered usually are good for the house nothing else.

If you want a good all around dog, get him a heeler. Be aware that it will work the crap out of you because they get bored. The same with a cur, it is a working dog, so they need to be exercised or they will tear shite up.

Curs are very protective of their food, so other dogs become an issue. Also, they will climb fences and get into anything, I had some hang themselves trying to jump out of the dog yard or in the cow trailer. You can get a good one for free or cheap and it will be the best dog, I myself wouldn't spend a lot of money on one especially if you aren't hunting or working cattle. The only ones truly worth money are the ones that are started.

I had a male I raised from a pup and I wouldn't have taken any amount for him. He could do whatever I wanted, but it took a long time for that. He wouldn't listen to anyone else though.

Look in the market bulletin or around the feed stores where you live and someone will be getting rid of some puppy's. Get you a male if you want a calm one, female if you want one that works. Males are hit or miss, some are lazy. Females aren't. Also, do you want a big cur (some get huge) or a small cur. I wouldn't want a big one, they eat too much and get too big. If you want a pretty one, someone will have some merles or leopards, try not to get white, especially on the head; many are deaf. Think ornery like a dalmation. Most are hard headed, so you need to be prepared to wear them out before they listen. If you are active, its a great dog.

I have a Catahoula and they are great dogs. Yes they are hyper when they are young. But I find it pretty funny that people are saying dont get a Catahoula because they are crazy, but then suggest collies, heelers, and BMCs . All sporting dogs are going to be nuts when they are young. From my experience, a Catahoula is as good as any other of those breeds. P.S., they are no longer considered Curs

I would let him get the Catahoula. Between owning damn near every type of sporting dog there is at one point, the Catahoula is just as good as the others.

Good post.

This one is my very dramatic child.

Momma says no more dogs since we lost our bulldog. He is now coming to me for another.

First time in his life we have only had two. Yellow lab and redbone. Feels he needs his "own".

With that said, I am partial to BMC since we had one.
