Push lawn mower "burning" through spark plugs?

My lawn mower is burning through spark plugs, and by burning through, I mean within 20 minutes of putting a new one in, it is all black and the lawn mower want fire/start anymore.
I changed my oil at the end of last summer, so the oil shouldn't be bad. Did I put too much or too little oil?
I know nothing about engines except the basics, so talk to me like I'm 8.

when I replaced the spark plug, it immediately ran fine until the spark plug got all burned up again

It's very uncommon for a small engine to not run because of a spark plug. Hell, I've even ran them on an ol plug out of my truck. If it were me, I would run it until it started acting up, then immediately conduct a spark test to see if it was sparking. A "burnt/bad plug" will not stop it from sparking.

what will cause it from not sparking?

carbon build up on the plug
sounds like a carb issue

Ok, let's get back to basics.
Brand, size, and year of engine?
Got a pic?
What did it do when it started running badly?

And what do you mean by burning up? Just carbon buildup on the tip, or is the electrode completely gone?

Honda 4 stroke about 3 years old

sounded like it was dying but never would
and yes, it is carbon build up on the tip
that is what I meant by "burned through"
it happened within 20 minutes of me putting a brand new spark plug in this weekend

OK, the best way to get to the problem is to try and duplicate it, then diagnose. This is a process you COULD take.
-Run it until it acts up.
-Pull spark plug and check for good spark.
If it were me, I would pull the carb and clean it, becuase 99.999999% of the time, this is the problem. The fact that you have little engine knowledge makes me believe this is probably your problem.

Kind of sounds like you overfilled the oil, but does it smoke a bunch?

sounds like the carb is running rich, may have a stuck float or the adjustment screw has worked itself out a little

Kinda sounds like a lack of maintenance to me. Before he resorts to pulling the carb. he should first reclean the plug and replace the air filter. If the electrode is black and oily it's running to rich and most likely due to fouled air filter. Do the simple things first.

Checking the oil level and replacing the filter are easy. Clean that plug on a bench grinder. If those don't work, taking apart the carb is an option

last summer when it started acting up I changed the oil and cleaned the filter
didn't help
then I changed the spark plug and it ran fine for awhile, but just started acting up again
changed the spark plug again, and this time it carbed up in 20 minutes

IME on small engines, 99% of the time it is a problem with the carb. That much residue on the plug in 20 mins is def a problem with the air/ fuel mix.
I would just go to a repair shop and get a new carb, they are relatively cheap, I replace mine about every 3 years, they dont seem to last much longer than that.
