I think most of these stories are plants to make them look tough/psycho so the international community will be hesitant to take action which may cause an illogical response.

You are probably correct but NK is pretty fricked up and only about 12 centuries behind Afghanistan.

These could be just made up, but I think they just want attention.
Noone thinks they are tough or are scared of them. Their military is antiquated and it's am impoverished country. NK's regime would be wiped out in the blink of an eye if they warranted action.
