Teacher / Student fight - Superintendent has to crawfish
Posted by jbgleason on 4/7/14 at 3:12 pm00
So here's a good one for the ever ending OT debate on the modern classroom.
INITIAL REPORT - SUPERINTENDENT BACKS STUDENT
A Santa Monica High School teacher has been placed on leave following a fight with a student Friday morning. The school district is giving few details of the incident, but the Superintendent Sandra Lyon has sent the following letter to staff, students and parents:
"Today, a deeply disturbing incident involving a teacher and student occurred in a classroom at Santa Monica High School, resulting in the Santa Monica Police Department being called to the campus. A number of videos capturing at least a portion of the incident are circulating, and I can tell you that what I witnessed on one of those videos is utterly alarming. We have been in contact with the student's family, and we will work with them to offer the support that they may need. I am grateful that there is no reported serious physical harm to students or teachers, but that neither dismisses the severity of this situation nor my commitment to gather all the facts and make sure the proper actions are taken.
Until the investigation is complete, we will not have all the details that led up to this incident; nevertheless, based on what I have viewed, the kind of physical restraint used by the teacher is unacceptable. I have placed the teacher on leave pending the outcome of an independent investigation.
AND THEN... the truth comes out. Students were selling drugs in the classroom and swung on teacher when he told them to stop. Superintendent backpedals.
Santa Monica's school superintendent has apologized for comments she made about a popular science teacher she placed on leave after cellphone videos showed him fighting with a student in a classroom.
Superintendent Sandra Lyon acknowledged public anger that her statements reflected "pre-judgment" of Santa Monica High School teacher Mark Black before the completion of an investigation, the Los Angeles Times reported Monday.
"There is also concern about my failure to address the conduct of one or more students who were involved in the incident. In retrospect, I understand how my statement has created these concerns," Lyon said in a weekend letter to the community.

Between the arrest of the teacher in Baker and this, I wouldn't take a teaching job even if they were paying a decent wage.
TLDR - CLIFFS
Kids sell drugs in classroom.
Teacher tells them to stop.
Students swings at teacher.
Teacher takes student down and holds on ground.
Superintendent puts teacher on leave and says it was unacceptable without knowing what happened.
Superintendent is forced to apologize to everyone.
Would you take a teaching job these days?

No, but this story is not the reason why.

That school may want to rethink the "firing".

such bullshite.
Wait, let me get this straight -- an "authority figure" made up his/her mind without getting all the facts.
No way. That could never happen. I mean what kind of sleazeball would do such a thing.

So the teacher didn't hit the kid, the teacher didn't slam the kid, the teacher didn't even hurt the kid, all he did was use a hold to subdue the kid from trying to fight and the teacher is wrong?
This is a whole bunch of BS

teachers don't routinely start fights with students. Administrators need to have faith in their teachers.
This could have been simply defused stating that we have well trained faculty here at this school where teachers know how to handle themselves and disruptive students.
Right now we know nothing of what actualy happened and we need to find out what happened until we jump to any hasty conclusions.
Why do people want to jump to such hasty conclusions anymore? Obama and his statements that lead to the boston beer summit. The news in response to the martin incident.
Hell, we can find that out time and time again. There is no reason for these people to feed into the immediate news cycle when they have the time to wait to gather the facts before saying anything.
Coming to a conclusion like that frankly shows stupidity and that is worse than her just jumping the gun.

Listen up guys. Ya'll need to stop selling drugs right now. I'm serious, this is my job, people.
What do they mean told them to stop. How about?
"Hey, um 911, I just caught students selling drugs. Yes I have them right here in my classroom. What do you mean is there a dog around here? How would me shooting a dog stop them from selling drugs? A brake tag checkpoint? That's your suggestion for preventing future drug sales in my classroom?"

Damn! You mean it is unwise to blindly believe what is shown on a partial video??? This will be a real shock to many OT members.

That's how typical phone calls to 911 go.
I only posted one side of the conversation. You get to fill in the blanks with your imagination.

Nothing is more of a de-motivator than feeling like your boss doesn't have your back.

I can get out in two more years. Really thinking about it, as much as I love teaching.

I'd probably fire him for not contacting proper authorities when he saw drugs being sold. The other stuff is bs and sounds like self defense. It actually looks like he restrained the student instead of really fighting back. Well done in that regard.

Almost everyone I know who became a teacher got out.
The only one I know still doing it is teaching at a very good school and coaching the cheerleading squad. She is dealing with well off, bright students. Much different.
