Explain little league baseball and all star teams for me (EBR/ascension)

There are a dozen leagues or so. Which ones form all star teams? What age does it start at?
Got a kid in his third league in three years. Just been having fun with it, but he seems pretty decent at the game.

Parish league = no all star
City league=travel ball
Travel ball is where the allstars come from.
You definitely want to try and get your kid on the gonzales team. They have a long history of winning, producing pro prospects, and having success nationally.

Name? Got him in the ascension baseball league this year, which I think is not what you refer to.

In Dixie you play a season then the coaches pick the all star team. Usually every division of the league will have one. For example West Monroe will have 2-3 teams for the same age group. They'll play a district tournament and then move on to state. Teams usually start in pitching machine. Not sure about other places, but around here pretty much coaches' sons make up the team. There are exceptions, but the majority of the team that seems to be the case. Now whether they're selected because of GOB network or because they're the best players since Dad works with them more is up for debate.

I can only imagine the fun. I remember watching my cousin play Dixie ball as a kid over the summers in Caldwell parish

I dont think leagues really form all star teams anymore.. At least not in the leagues we've played.. Most of the kids/teams either play tournaments or tryout for all-star/tournament teams outside of league.
My oldest plays on a hybrid, play both league with a smattering of tournaments until league is over. All kids from same school and a blast for the kids and the parents. He then will probably play on a higher classification tournament team through July and then on to Football.

It's gone downhill as travel ball has taken most of the talent out of the league. They've stopped playing games on Saturdays to try and get the kids back. Even then you'll have Dads saying their kids won't pitch past Tuesday because they're playing in a tournament that weekend. So you handicap yourself if you take them.

I've been umpiring since I was 15 I'm 27 now.. But rec ball in my area has just taken a nose dive.. There are 4 to 5 travel teams for each age group now.. Coaches can't coach in rec and travel teams IMO play way to many games.. Growing up we had 1 select team and that was put together when we were 12

That's the parish league. I played in that league as a kid. If your kid plays well in that league and has a coach worth a darn, that coach should recommend he try out for the travel/all star teams.
If he really loves baseball but doesn't make the all star teams, you can sign him up for fall ball as well so he can get more practice.

No and yes. we play U-Trip and are usually finished by July 4th or so. It is expensive if you are really traveling though. Hotels, meals, field time, uniforms, equipment, etc. We are also planning to go to Cooperstown next year and that will be a chunk of change. Will be doing some fundraising by working the gate at tournaments, concession stands and so forth. We DO NOT stand at The Wal Marks or on street corners and beg you to pay for our kids to go. Any fundraising is as described above or through sponsorships; so you actually get something in exchange for your money. I can't stand the ones who just beg for change to travel. Either raise the money through worthwhile projects, or pony up yourself so your kid can play. No one is entitled to play travel ball.

He's young and does seem to have a really good coach.
What ages do they generally start the select teams at?

that's the answer I was hoping for
Some people probably judge me, but he's lost a brother on these streets and I'm all for ANYTHING positive to keep them focused and busy.
