people always slam the bcs for screwing up and laud college basketball for allowing their championship matchup to be decided on the court, but is having a 7 and 8 seed playing for the title really a good thing? It basically renders the regular season useless and doesn't reward success at all. I know most years a 1 seed wins, but a lot of times we see a lower seed sneak into a title game because they underachieved all season and get hot at the right time. People complain about the bcs, but you always have the best team in it, and a dispute about who is the 2nd or 3rd best.

Not really good or bad, just depends on whether or not you want the regular season to mean anything

The fact that it's two storied programs who had mediocre seasons (by their standards) kind of makes it less interesting to me.

Kentucky is finally playing to their talent level. This squad is normally a 1 or 2 seed with that talent.

It would have been great if it was two legitimate Cinderellas.

I have a hard time calling either of these two programs "Cinderellas." They have both won NCs in the last 5 years.

TV would have hated it, but if it was two programs that had never been there before like Baylor and Gonzaga, I would enjoy it more.

pretty terrible if anybody ever wants to defend the tourney as anything more than duck dynasty-level entertainment

I love the tourney.. but I think this particular scenario is bad. You have two traditional powerhouses who had slightly down years. I'm not near as interested as I would normally be.

And it just adds validity to the notion that the regular season doesn't mean anything.

People give the BCS shite.. but it almost always gets it right. Even in the controversial years (03, 04, 11), the teams that made the game had a good case to be there.

Maybe college basketball should get rid of the tourney and do something like bowl games...

It is like 2013 Michigan playing 2013 Texas for the national championship in football.

You just don't like the definition of a tournament champion.

This is such a dumb statement that has now been used several times

So the team that beat the overall #1 seed in the regular season AND in the tourney isn't talented or makes them a valid team?

Or the team that has SIX incoming McDonald's All-Americans that are finally gelling at the right time doesn't make them a valid team?

So according to the BCS lovers, you would rather have a team that can't beat a 7 seed on two separate occasions and a team that lost in the round of 32 meet in the title game because they had the two highest rankings? That sounds just awesome

Sorry that college basketball is a little too complex for most of you.

I couldn't care less about the seeds in the championship game. At the end of the day, it's two teams that are playing fantastic basketball and it should provide for an entertaining game.

No it isn't unless those two teams went through a 64 team tournament and beat everyone else.

If that was the case 2013 Michigan and Texas would be a lot more deserving of playing in the NC.

sure i do, but a single-elimination basketball tournament with way too many teams in it is a bastardization of the process

why didn't they do it over the 30+ games in the regular season, then? that was a legitimate sample. the tourney? not so much

basketball is a weird game when outlier games happen often. that's why basketball elimination series should be 5-7 games ideally, but 3 game series minimum if time is truly an issue

I don't think it's a bad thing as long as you realize the winner is the national champion, but not necessarily the best team of the 2013-2014 NCAA basketball season. There's a difference. I don't think a "tournament champion" gives us a "true" champion (or best team), especially with 64 teams. But sports is entertainment, and we love us some tournaments.

With that said, I think (small) tournaments are necessary in college sports to determine a champion because of the unequal regular seasons. Professional sports have more equality with their seasons, so the it's easier to determine a best team without playoffs.

I think football has it right. I liked the BCS and thought that to be a national champion, don't screw up in the regular season (lose once) and you can't bitch. Now I like the 4-team, but do not want an 8-team. Teams 4-8, who will have 2-3 losses each (yes, I realize LSU 07), do not deserve to win a national title.

While I am not a big fan of basketball, I have to say that the NBA has the best playoff system of any league on the planet. Who ever wins the NBA title is pretty much the best team in basketball.
