Parents' Yard Going To Hell (plus bonus question, what's the worst yardwork?

I've talked with my father about it, but he's been vague and has some master plan for what he's trying to do, but meanwhile, the yard looks like crap.

He's trying to make the grass die because the yard gets no sun because we have so many trees in our yard. The area where grass grows is like 1/3 of the yard. The rest of the yard he wants full of decaying leaves.

He doesn't want to cut down any trees in the yard even though it's a safety hazard. We have something like 200 trees in our front yard and many many more in our backyard. I've gotten him to agree to let me cut down some of the young trees, but he said I have to wait. I doubt anything happens with that.

He wants our house to not be visible from the street for some reason (it's not like our house is nice and would attract attention from unsavory people). He's trying to grow palemetos and it just looks silly. Especially since we have some nice houses on the block and ours stands out for all the wrong reasons.

I'm surprised he hasn't gotten a notice from the HOA.

Meanwhile, the backyard is a jungle. We had a structure only about 30 feet from the house and we can't even see it really anymore.

It's not like yard work isn't done ( i helped out my dad this weekend), but, it really hasn't done much. Sooner or later, they or I will have to sell the house and the yard will be a major liability.

TL: Parents' home yard needs work, but they don't want to do anything major for improvement. Advice?

Plus, bonus question: what yard work do you hate the worst? I'll go with picking up pine cones and sticks. Get covered with spiders and all sorts of other critters. The amount of trees in our yard make so that in a week, everything's back to the same.

Find Harvey Updyke and tell him your dad pissed on Saban's statue?

me too

It sounds like the yard is overgrown. Since you mention pine, it is a fire hazard to have the brush and forest debris that close to the house.

Worst-I don't like hedge trimming.

I would like to drive by if it's in the Athens area.

you can try to persuade him with the safety talk. maybe get your mom on your side if she's in the picture. you know your dad better than anyone on here. if he's the type you can be blunt to, be blunt to him. if he's going to get offended, go with the 'fire hazard' argument, or with the 'resale value' argument.

ultimately he's a man though and he's going to do what he wants unless you can convince him otherwise.

Next time they go out of town mow everything and drop a few trees. that should teach him.

Seriously though, why so worried about your parents yard if it's what they like?

Edging. I'd pay someone to do just that and let me handle the rest.

Raking. I refuse to do it and just mow everything.

How old are they? Are they going to sell it themselves? If the burden is going to be yours to sell, then you should be able to tell them y'all need to make improvements, or at the very least, keep it well maintained.

Worst yard work: weeding.

St. Augustine or Zoysia if you are dealing with shade issues.

Even with a shade tolerant grass, you're gonna be battling trees all the time due to the roots competing for water and nutrients.

This is a BAD idea as it will breed numerous pests. Low ground cover or some type of permeable surface, gravel etc, would be better.

Anyone who doesn't say weeding the garden is the worst yard maintenance just doesn't know... Other than that, working the shovel is a bitch.

Jungle?

Weeding is the worst. I'd rather paint my walls and watch the paint dry.

Weeding the flower beds. The little woman wants flowers and flower beds, she knows who isn't touching those SOB's. I'll pay the kids down the street to do it

I'm with the OP. Even if the shite wasn't mine, it would drive me crazy.

Edging really isn't that bad if you have the attachment to your weedeater.

How it hasn't been brought up yet is beyond me, but cutting back azalea bushes has to be the worst yard work I have ever done. We have to have at least 50 in our front yard which all got to be about the size of a vehicle by the time I was tasked with cutting them back a couple years ago.

My parents place is a disaster. They live on 20 acres and my dad travels alot. Finally convinced him to hire a lawn service to at least cut the grass. I've been spraying everything lese with roundup.

Maybe prune the lower branches to allow more sunlight.
