Idles fine, but when you accelerate it dies. No issues starting or idling, only when you give it gas.

Sounds like a carb prob. run some seafoam through it and I bet it will get you back right! If not would look at a carb rebuild.
ETA: Assuming its an older model carborated.

This has to be a fuel filter or something involving it not getting fuel I believe but I'm no mechanic

No inline fuel filter. Will be installing one soon though

if it has sat very long the carbs
need cleaning l,most likely.
if its been fine and is a new thing, its prob water in fuel.
theres a drain plug on the bottom of the carbs. pull them and pump the bubble to flush out.
if its fuel injected,disregard.
check the water separator if it has one.

High speed jets are plugged. Pull carb and soak it in carb cleaner to rebuild.

Is this happing while run engine on ear muffs?

follow fuel line from engine to gas tank. fuel sep. will look like an oil filter. unscrew amd empty into a container and see if it has water in it.
how long has it been sitting

It's been sitting a few months, and I haven't tried it on ear muffs only in the lake.

If it is the carbs can I take them off and soak them in solvent to clean them or will they need rebuilding to clean?

Check the spark plugs, they may be fouled out.

they need to be disassembled to soak. usually you don't need any parts. you can find exploded views of the carburetor online

If you are very careful when pulling it apart, you can reuse the gasket and no need of buying a kit.

shite went though that last year. rebuilt carbs sea form, and replaced plugs and powerpack and stator

Do you have VRO oil injection? Those are notorious for the fuel side of the pump cutting out. Idles fine and then cuts when you give it gas.
Take a look under your flywheel as well. If you see any brass dust it may be time to pull the flywheel and replace the plate the coils sit on.
Ive got a 50 horse from 89 that gets used 5 days a week and those are the only big issues I've had. Just a heads up from someone thats put far more hours than usual on one.

Before going crazy and breaking things down check the entire fuel line from the tank to the engine. It's possible you have a small hole or loose fitting that is sucking air into the fuel line. Had this happen on my tiller 25, idled great but would bog down when I goosed it.
