Watching tv and an angler was docked 2 lbs cause he put the fish against him while unhooking. What's the reason for this rule?

K but why? Official said something about "touching" fish.

Probably for rubbing fish's slime (protective layer) off the fish.

I think it was MLF. Regardless, I'm just wondering why such a rule exists.

for the same reason they penalize if you let the fish touch the carpet or if you drop them from above the gunwales. Its for the health of the fish.

I wonder how much that really matters.

I don't fish for bass or in tournaments so I'd never heard of that either. In fact, very surprised to hear that.

Thanks. I found it on your link but it doesn't say why, specifically. I can't imagine what else it could be though.
quote:

f. LANDING FISH: While landing fish, the fish cannot touch the carpet at any time during the process. If the fish comes unhooked from the bait and falls to the carpet it will be assessed as a violation. Excepted from this rule will be laying the fish on the carpet to remove a deep set hook, “only after it has been properly landed without it touching the carpet”. Angler should first ask the Boat Official to lay the fish on the carpet before doing so. Additionally, angler is not allowed to cradle fish or allow fish that he is landing to touch his body. An angler cannot allow a fish to touch any part of his body other than his hands or forearms. From a rules standpoint, the body is to be treated the same as the carpet.

Now I realize why he was lying down and chatting with the official. I was flipping when I saw it so wasn't watching from before.

2 minutes seems insignificant but I bet to them, it's an eternity.

If the line pops when they're hooked up they get penalized as well. I'm so addicted to MLF I bought the season online

Dayum. Isn't that a bit much and really out of their control?

Some more of the rules:

quote:

n. PERSONAL FLOTATION DEVICE: Each competitor and Boat Official must wear a Coast Guard-approved chest-type life preserver. Camera Operators are not required to wear the PFD
