Sorry, its true. Was in DC a couple weeks ago and hit happy hour at Old Ebbets Grill twice. Plumper, better texture, just the right amount of brininess. Superior to any Gulf oysters I've ever had.

Now Gulf shrimps are a different story. I have never had better shrimps than Gulf shrimps.

I would not argue that.

They're in an ocean.

Yeah but aren't they like $3 a pop?

There are a lot better oysters than gulf oysters. No doubt. Had some Prince Edward Island oysters and about 6 other kind in Vancouver area that were all superior. Just be glad that you have some decent ones readily available for fairly cheap here.
We could be land locked.

I love oysters from New England, Pacific Northwest and the Gulf. All different and all good for different uses.

Gulf shrimp are absolutely superior.

You're just now finding this out?

My personal current favorite oysters are Island Creek.

Yep. Gulf oysters are plentiful and a solid option but there are definitely many better IMO.

You can travel the world and eat shrimp and prawns, but gulf shrimp(all varieties) are hard to beat.

I believe, on average, oysters from the upper Atlantic (North Carolina through Maine) are superior. But, a Gulf oyster in prime season is a wonderful product.

I've never, ever tasted a Pacific oyster that I enjoyed. Not that I've had them all, but the ones I had, post BP spill, plain sucked.

All have different charachteristics. Pacific ones have a melon or cucumber flavor. Northeast oysters especially the Prince Edward Island oysters are very clean and salty tasting. Gulf oysters have earthy almost mushroomesque flavors. We got a sack of PEI`s last year and it was 100 ct for about 95 bucks, well worth it.

Good description. I would agree with this.

Stayed at the Sofitel and hit there a few times myself. Well worth the price weren't they?

Water temperature differential is the reason for that being the case. French coast oysters of the North Sea/English channel area are better than those of US coast waters.

That was the consensus of a cooking show I saw a few years back - gulf oysters were better for frying than those in the northeast. Northeast's were better raw.
