Hate to post this here, but not sure where else to go. I have a bachelor's degree already, but I want to take a semester or two of classes as a part-time student to prepare myself for a master's program (in a different field than my undergrad).

I've talked to nearly every department at LSU that has anything to do with any kind of advising or admissions and NO. ONE. KNOWS WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT. I've gotten some information from them that is absolutely false, such as that LSU doesn't offer the option to take classes as a non-degree seeking student. The website mentions the option to study as a non-matriculating student who already has a Bachelor's and is preparing for further study, but there are no instructions on how to apply as such, and there's no place on the application to indicate that you wish to be a non-matriculating student.

Maybe a long shot, but has anyone on here applied to LSU in such a capacity?

Im considering doing the same as I already have my degree. I think when you fill out the application, you have to apply as a guest student.

I did, went back after graduating for pre-med

ETA: called a non-matriculating student. You can also just declare a major, no biggie.

I took a semester and a summer of classes after my degree to prep for a different grad school. I didn't gave to apply or anything. Crazy part is that my gpa kept going on my transcript and it doesn't even mention my graduation. I just kept taking classes until I was admitted to grad school. Noise show it works, you just pay to take classes.

Asked a friend who did this, she said to contact the grad school office. They should be able to help you.

I did this. All I did was apply online and I had a response within a week. I'm a lsu alum so I don't know if that made a difference. You are going for something right? So declare that as your intention. For the first semester I went back I was non-matriculating until I got accepted into the college.

I did this to get 9 more hours to sit for the CPA and had no desire to get masters.

I went and talked to the graduate admissions officer for the department I wanted to enter. He basically laid out a path for me to embark on. He didn't guarantee me anything, but he told me if I made a C in any of the classes he planned for me to not come and talk to him again. Pretty rough, but it was better than nothing.

How'd that work out for you? I did the same just not at LSU. I didn't end up going to med school (not sure if I will).

Got to grad school website and apply. They ask you degree-seeking or non. Choose non-degree. You then become a non matriculating graduate student. You still have to get accepted though.

Thanks for the replies. The only issue is that I'm trying to catch up on undergraduate-level courses that are suggested prerequisites for my intended Masters program that were not necessary for my undergraduate degree; I wouldn't want to fill out the graduate application for this, correct?

Same. Did well on the MCAT got an interview with LSU-NO.

Didn't go. ObamaCare had just passed and I was well on my way with my current career. Had to make the tough choice.

I took 2 screen-writing classes at LSU as a no-matriculating student.

It was no big whoop. Just registered like most everyone else, paid the cash, went to classes and kicked arse.

You can take 12 hours as non-matriculating grad student 4000 level or above that can be applied to a master's degree before you take the GRE. That's what I did. I took a year off, then took 12 hours. Then took GRE and finished master's

I've been down this road, so here is what to do and what not to do.

To apply, you have to apply to the graduate school. I believe there is an option or place to put that you are applying as non-matriculated. Or you can include you objective(s) in your application letter. You basically have to go through all the formalities a degree seeking graduate student would go through, and, unless you make sure you tell LSU you are NOT seeking admission into any formal graduate school and instead are just looking to take some classes, you will be held to the same grading standards as a graduate student (can't make below a 3.0).

I cannot stress how important that last part is. I have a degree in accounting - graduated with 121 hours - and needed an extra 29 hours to sit for the CPA. When I applied non-matriculated I was unaware I had to inform them that I was NOT seeking admission to the masters of accountancy program and as a result got screwed over by LSU and went through hell emailing and meeting with people in the graduate school dept. (some are borderline incompetent).

Long story short, I had a spring intersession course and 9 hours of summer school scheduled...took the spring course, passed with an A, and with two weeks to go until the start of summer school my schedule was purged completely. Apparently my gpa fell below a 3.0 from the two classes I took in the spring semester as a non-matriculated student and they purged my schedule...they promised I'd get my schedule back but that never happened. They also never told me why my schedule got purged, so when I had the same issue again I met with them and they finally expained it. I had to write a letter to the dean of the graduate school ezplaining I was not looking to get into a masters program and they let me into the classes I needed without holding me to th GPA requirement.

If you have any questions...ask away...
