Ill bishop upholds priest's decision to deny Communion to Sen. Durbin

And there will be wailing and gnashing of teeth
quote:
Bishop Thomas J. Paprocki of Springfield, Illinois, known for his outspoken defense of the right to life and the natural family, has signaled his support for denying Communion to Catholic politicians who publicly endorse activities gravely contrary to the moral law.
The bishop wrote recently to a pro-life activist to affirm that he is upholding a diocesan priest’s decision to deny Communion to U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-IL, who has a 100% rating from NARAL Pro-Choice America and Planned Parenthood.
Paprocki’s e-mail was reported Thursday by Catholic commentator Matt Abbott.
“Senator Durbin was informed several years ago by his pastor at Blessed Sacrament Parish here in Springfield that he was not permitted to receive Holy Communion per canon 915 of the Code of Canon Law,” Paprocki wrote. “My predecessor upheld that decision and it remains in effect. It is my understanding that the senator is complying with that decision here in the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois.”
Canon 915 states that those who are “obstinately persevering in manifest grave sin are not to be admitted to Holy Communion.”
In placing the onus on ministers of Holy Communion, canon 915 is distinct from canon 916, which places the onus on the communicant to not approach for Communion if they are “conscious of grave sin.”

This is the kind of stuff that I really don't get worked up about either way.
Communion or no communion ... a TPOS like Dick Turbin will get what's coming to him sooner or later.

it seems like a good decision by the Bishop but this is a complex issue surrounding Cannon 915. I haven't studied cannon law one bit so I can't really comment.

Appears Durbin has put the god of politics above the God of his religion. His choice.
Nothing here to be upset about from the church.

Although no longer considering myself a Catholic at times I do wish the Bishops and Arch-bishops would take an even bolder stance and announce ex-communications for the Democrats who support abortion. Just seeing their reactions would be money as they would be grilled by the media on them.

Somehow I doubt Durbin really cares.

I may be wrong but I don't think it is up to individual priests to make these decisions usually the bishop makes these decisions.

In the Book of Philippians Paul warns those that choose to make a living/career off o the preaching about Jesus that they will have some splaining to do one day. The couple that tried to build their egos/status amongst the Christians with their piety for selling everything and giving it all(sorry they didn't)to the church did not bode well for them. Both of them suffered from a severe attack of sudden death before they got out of the church or just a short distance away from it. Paul earned his living byway of being a tent maker which was his trade and donations of one woman an her church in Jerusalem.

First, you must be in a state of grace. "Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the body and blood of the Lord. Let a man examine himself, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup" (1 Cor. 11:27–28).

Grave matter includes, but is not limited to, murder, receiving or participating in an abortion, homosexual acts, having sexual intercourse outside of marriage or in an invalid marriage, and deliberately engaging in impure thoughts (Matt. 5:28–29)
Seems to be pretty clear
I have no problem with it

There are plenty of Christian denominations that he could join which support abortion on demand.
If you join a church, you agree to its doctrine and practices. If you can't agree with them, then don't join--find another one or start your own.

Do you advocate for the excommunication of Republicans who are pro-capital punishment as well?

You mean "an eye for an eye" ?

Capital punishment (in certain circumstances) isn't against the moral law. The Holy See had capital punishment on its books until 1969.

Why would they be excommunicated?

I agree. The RCC is gutless when it comes to this. The RCC will say that by their actions/statements, they have self-excommunicated themselves; however, they should publically do it.
The reason they do NOT is because these same people support policies completely in line with the "social justice" agenda of many clergy in the RCC.

"An eye for an eye?" Kind of like "thou shalt not kill?"

The correct translation is "murder." Also, try Romans 13.
