One of those sandwich makers like Sandwich Man used to make them. They were great.

What unusual or odd combinations have you heard of on sandwiches that turn out to be good?

I have never heard about it, and I don't think it would be something I would like if it was put into my mouth

I am a little like Citwtt in that it doesn't sound like something I could see doing.

Why not have a bite of ham sandwich and then chew and swallow before eating a bite of tater salad.

Never could see those Pittsburgh French fries piled up on a sandwich with the result of a sandwich that is too thick to get into my mouth. I verified this by going with my son to Primanti Brother's for one. I was correct. It was too thick for my liking.

By the way, there are incredible food stores just around the corner from Primanti Brother's.

Do they still sell Mrs. Drake sandwiches in NO? One of my favorites as a kid was the luncheon meat and potato salad. They even had a turkey and dressing sandwich around the holidays.

This is a leftover food staple for me and I can't count how many times I've eaten it.

I love odd food combos like that though, particularly on sandwiches. Strangest one I've done is probably tuna salad and roast beef, and it was damn good. (There's probably a joke in there somewhere )

CITWTT and MD, the ham and potato salad is a great combination. I think I first tried it because that was all they had left, but it was surprisingly good. It's similar to having bacon in German potato salad. Very complimentary flavors.

ETA: Now that I think about it, the fact that those sandwiches sat around for a couple of days probably had a lot to do with why I liked it. The flavors had a chance to meld.

In answering my own original question about unusual combos (there I go again), I'm going to try the hot tamale poboy today for lunch.

French fries on a sandwich is fricking retarded.

Potato salad is probably a little more viable, although still sounds pretty damn heavy and nonsensical.

Found this in cyberspace:

quote:

Mrs. Drake Sandwiches, a long time favorite for many New Orleans natives, closed its' doors in 1998. Chicken salad, egg salad, ham & pot. salad were some of the best sellers. The sandwich company began when its' founder purchased a corner vendors stand along with the Mrs. Drake name. They went on to have a full production facility located at Canal & Broad.

The building is still there, adorned with the Mrs. Drake Ducks you remember. It's next door to the Rite-Aid and behind the wooden fence. Go down Iberville, just behind Canal at Broad and you will see a cream clolored building with blue doors. That was Mrs. Drake's home.

The Clifton L. Ganus/James W. Ganus family owned Mrs. Drake Sandwiches, A & G Cafeterias, Crazy Legs Fried Chicken and founded Clifton L. Ganus School located on Paris Ave. in New Orleans. All were closed between 1996 -1998.

And I think it was Mrs. Drakes that had the potato salad & ham sandwich, which is why I haven't seen them in a while.

Mrs. Drakes had a bunch of trouble with the board of health, which probably hastened their demise.
