Every time I watch this movie, I get pissed as shite. Between the slack-jawed sheriff and the fricker in the CAT hat... beating Jack Nicholson's brains in during the night, and then taking the 12-gauge to Fonda and Hopper.

Last two posts seem on track to me. Definitely seems like somewhere around central/western LA. As bass-akwards as JP is, still doesn't seem to fit.

The Morganza Cafe
They got snuffed in Pointe Coupee Parish. The café scene where they're called out for long hair was filmed in Morganza and was open until recent times. Scenes sort of skipped around between NOLA, BTR, and the Pointe, but you can make out the levee road in the final scene and aerial shot that follows.

Know the guys that played the coonasses that shot them. Even know the cop played at the end. Used to date his daughter. 
And yes, he didn't care much for me due to having very long hair back in those days.
