IQUIQUE, CHILE (BNO NEWS) — A massive earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 8.0 struck off the coast of northern Chile on Tuesday evening, prompting evacuations in coastal regions as a tsunami warning was issued for a large part of Latin America’s Pacific coast, officials said.
The 8.0-magnitude earthquake at 8:46 p.m. local time (2346 GMT) was centered about 83 kilometers (52 miles) northwest of Iquique, the capital of the Tarapaca Region in northern Chile. It struck about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) deep, making it an extremely shallow earthquake, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center immediately issued a tsunami warning for the Pacific coastlines of Chile, Peru and Ecuador, while a tsunami watch was in effect for Colombia, Panama and Costa Rica. It was not immediately known whether a tsunami had been generated by the earthquake.
“This warning is based only on the earthquake evaluation. An earthquake of this size has the potential to generate a destructive tsunami that can strike coastlines near the epicenter within minutes and more distant coastlines within hours,” the warning center said in a bulletin, adding that tsunami waves would be able to reach the coast of northern Chile within about 15 minutes of the earthquake.
Chile’s National Office of Emergency of the Interior Ministry (ONEMI) urged residents to immediately evacuate coastal areas. “SHOA (the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Chilean Navy) has issued a tsunami warning. ONEMI requests the evacuation of coastal areas in the country,” the office said.

Goddamnit, it was caused by aerosol spray cans and styrofoam plates.
