The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a regulation Monday requiring all vehicles, including new trucks and buses, to have rear-view visibility -- in effect, requiring backup cameras.
The rule applies to all vehicles with a gross weight rating up to 10,000 pounds -- from the smallest subcompact to commercial vans. It begins phasing in with 2016 models and takes full effect in May 2018.
The rule follows an outcry from consumer groups and families that have been touched by tragedies involving back-over accidents, especially those involving children in parking lots. They had been pushing hard against delays in implementing tougher standards. NHTSA says it has been listening.

Another thing for them to check at the brake tag station I suppose.

I'm betting that a good number of factories that make backup cameras are owned by politicians...

Better legislation would be to require the alcohol sensing steering wheels. A lot more lives are lost to drunk drivers than back over accidents.

Call me crazy, but this is one thing I don't mind that is in the name of safety.

I use mine all the time and so does my wife on her vehicle.

It provides the opportunity to see things in your rear view that you might not normally see.

I'm assuming this to be new vehicles.

Mine already has rear view capabilities. It has 3 mirrors and a rear window and I have a working neck.

I wanna start an outcry to make Sheila Jackson Lee wear a clown mask when she goes out in public, and another one that makes deedee wear a big red nose and antlers like Rudolph

no it doesnt, it a racket.

Nothing can replace what I see when I look into ALL 3 mirrors AND turn around to see whats behind me as well.

The only thing those cameras are good for is for hooking a trailer.

Wow. Backup cameras are nice and easy to use. I have no problem with this whatsoever. It will add very little cost to most vehicles since they already come with the display.

Only problem is when people use ONLY the camera and don't check their mirrors.

Yes. Same grandfather rules apply.

Like Pre 1967 doesn't need seatbelts
pre 96 doesn't need airbags
pre 2002 doesn't need dual airbags
pre 2008 doesn't need ABS
pre 1996 doesn't need OBD2
pre 1995 doesn't need R-134a
