I have a 10 y/o Rhodesian Ridgeback that I cannot get to quit sitting on the couch when we leave the house. Outside of blocking it with chairs and flipping up cushions, what else can be done? Can you teach an old dog new tricks?

When we first goth the dog, we thought it was cute for it to get on the couch. After three years we realized this was not going to work with our sofas. Now it is ruining the furniture. I have been asking around and I really enjoy reading this board, so I thought I would throw this one out to the OT.

Get a cover to put on the sofa He's an older fella and set in his ways. Work around it instead of trying to change him.

Put a sheet on the couch.

Or shoot him with a water gun like a cat when he jumps up there.

We recently banned my 5 year old dog from the couch. Took about a week but he got it.

Problem is, she is smart enough to know we don't want her up there so she waits until we leave. You can almost see the uh oh look on her face when we return home unexpectedly or forget something in the house and have to run back in. Does the OT think a dog trainer could actually break this habbit?

And there is where you failed, you have to be consistent with dogs just like you do real kids. You can't think it's cute and then turn around and tell it "no" and expect it to know wtf you are talking about. Start by praising/treating the dog for not being on the couch while you are in that room. It's going to be a slow process, don't expect the dog to learn and do it quickly.

Put a sheet on the couch. The dog is smart enough to wait until you leave, so I wouldn't waste any time training him.

Put a sheet on it and forget about it.

Lay newspaper on the couch. Dogs hate newspaper on couches.

Correct answer. We went thru the same thing with our beagle. Eventually had to get her a set of steps so she could still get on the couch. She's pretty old, has been a good dog and a better friend. I see no reason to now try and change something I let her do for years. It's just a couch after all.

kennel him

A comforter or dog bed in the kennel will make it comfortable and save your sofa. He'll likely sulk and howl the first time or two but he'll adapt if you are consistent about the new rules.

Nice.

We have a spray bottle with a water and vinegar mix. Be consistent with its use and it should work.

Get him a really nice, big, soft dog bed and place it nearby. He might just like it a lot better than the couch if it's more comfortable. When you give it to him, make a big deal out of it being his and place it close to a window or heat source if possible. Put a favorite toy nearby. Block the couch during the transition period. If that doesn't work, move the couch or share it with him. Dogs are pack "people" and usually like to hang out with their "pack" close by.

Get him his own couch. Seriously, they have large dog beds that are mini couches.

Dog Mats
We actually use these on our dogs and it has worked out extremely well. It's a pressurized mat that makes a really high pitched noise when your dog sits on it. It will immediately stop them from getting on the couch unless they are deaf.
