Flying with a 2 year old? Car seat or no?

5 hour flight tomorrow. They say they highly recommend bringing a car/safety seat but I feel like I never see people doing this. Would you bring your car seat on the plane?
Only reason I'm really considering it is because I'll need one when I get there.

Why would you bring a car seat?
Is the plane expecting to stop short at any point?
If the plane crashes, will the child be safer in a car seat?
Wut?

I never brought one for my kids when they were two. Both did fine.

Could stop short on the runway?
Only time a seatbelt is really applicable, or for a crash when the pilot may actually be able to land the craft

No. I flew to nc with a 2 year old and it absolutely isn't necessary. It would just be more shite to lug around.
It won't keep them any safer.

a car seat saved my kid's life when the plane went down.

We've flown three times with our three year old when she was between the ages of one and two and a half. We have never brought a car seat and just sat her on our lap. Although, our longest flight was only 3.5 hours. BUT if you need it when you're there then bring it. I believe you don't see it is bc people would have to pay for a plane ticket if car seat is used.

They claim it is a turbulence thing. I flew in October to LAX with an 11 month old and purchased an extra plane seat and drug the carseat onto the plane. He used the seat very little during the flight and the hassle of carrying it with your carry on luggage is as difficult as you can imagine. I used a strap that they sell on Amazon that uses the seat's existing clips and lets you strap it to your rolling carryon. No problems in the airport at all. The act of carrying that thing down the aisle was a giant pain. They are bulky enough that you have to carry it over the heads/shoulders of everyone already seated.
Not sure if that answers your question, but that is my experience.

I highly reccomend it. We brought one for our 18 month old for a long flight and loved it. We did this b/c we realized that if she wasn't strapped in she would be all over the place making an extremely exhausting flight for us and everyone around us. Just know that the car seat has to go in the window seat for safety reasons.

Well just as torn now as ever.
Pros:
It will be easier to keep her under control and she will almost certainly fall asleep in it.
Will use it in the rental car once we get there.
I guess safety on the hopefully very small chance of bad turbulence.
Cons:
Lugging it around.
Paying for a rental car seat.
Less chance she sleeps comfortably on the plane.

It's a PITA. I brought mine but checked it to use in the rental. Rental car seats are never inspected for mechanical malfunction and never sanitized. Seat would only be useful in the plane in case of crash landing or severe turbulence.

You're an inconsiderate a-hole for bringing your toddler/infant on a plane in the first place.

The pain of loading it on the plane was magnified on the way back when we had additional purchases to carry. Also, there was a connecting flight and transferring planes was a double PITA. I don't necessarily regret doing it though. Just be prepared for the eye rolls and annoyed looks as you try to get down the aisle.

Yes, Be prepared for judgement, but hell, those kind of people will judge and be negative no matter what you do. Don't worry about others. Do what you think is best for you and your child and what will make y'all most comfortable
As a worrier I have noticed m kids are far more adaptable than I give them credit. I try to figure out and plan decisions like this but in the end they will be fine no matter what.

Well I am flying Southwest who boards groups with small children first so I should be able to get it on and strapped in before it can bother anyone.

This article is a good one to follow.
My biggest thing for anyone, especially kids: Airplane earplugs. Ear barotrauma is bad enough for adults, and it could help take away one factor of a toddler being irritable on a flight.

Southeast no longer boards small groups 1st. They board after the A boarding group.
