Hello! Some friends and I are planning a camping trip over our spring break April 11-20. I'm from the Appalachian region and rather unfamiliar with camping this far west. We would like to go kayak and canoeing as well as hiking.
So my question is, what are some of your favorite places to camp? They don't have to be in Louisiana! We were discussing perhaps somewhere in Mississippi or the Ozarks? Anything within a 10 hour drive is fine with us. We're hoping to take advantage of beautiful weather, and to just kick back for a few days. Any recommendations are appreciated!!!! Thanks in advanced.

Okatoma river in MS is most fun kayaking/canoeing area. A few small waterfalls to go over and a decent current.

Not sure about hiking in the area.

You can camp at campgrounds or in the river on a sandbar during overnight trip.

The lower part off the river is a party river like nothing else in the surrounding area. Especially on weekends. Much more secluded if you get shuttled further north to make it a multi day trip.

All beer has to be in a coozie and no bottles allowed

Another good one. Much more impressive river and surroundings than the Okatoma, just a lot farther away

Petit Jean or Shady Lake in Arkansas. Shady Lake is not far from the La border.

Campgrounds at Shady Lake are some of my favorites. You can't even see your neighbor from some. It's in the mountains, on a stream. has waterfalls and swimming areas nearby.
