Louisiana excluding magnet schools from national awards

Louisiana is excluding magnet schools from the chance to win a prestigious national award in favor of “nonselective” schools, a move that the head of the nation’s largest organization of magnet schools says is absurd.
quote:
Blue Ribbon School of Excellence honors go to schools that either are among the nation’s top performers or have shown significant progress in improving student achievement.
quote:
Thomas said he is not aware of any other state in the country that won’t let magnet schools compete for national Blue Ribbon School of Excellence honors.
quote:
Private schools in Louisiana, many of which are highly selective, remain eligible for Blue Ribbon School of Excellence honors but go through a different nomination process via the Council for American Private Education.
quote:
Landry said Louisiana opted to take advantage of a new federal rule this year that allows states to set their own criteria for which schools to nominate.
As a BRMHS alum, this frustrates me. BRMHS took alot of pride in their Blue Ribbon status during my time there--and they earned it. I don't get it. Selective or not, should we not be rewarding excellence? Especially when you consider that private schools remain eligible. I know this might not be that big of a deal to many of y'all, but I think this is just another sign that LA's education system is becoming a joke.

Why is Blue Ribbon of Excellence important?
Posted on 3/30/14 at 11:22 am to Zach
This is what the program itself says.
Many National Blue Ribbon Schools find they attract business partners, financial assistance and volunteers. If school choice is an option, student applications to National Blue Ribbon Schools increase. Less quantifiably, the Award inspires students: “You have pride, knowing your school worked so hard to reach that goal,” one student noted. The Award re-energizes staff and parents. Teachers describe a renewed commitment to exchanging new ideas with one another. Student pride and staff confidence grow.

Just as I expected. It's feel good BS. Elite schools don't need any friggin' ribbon. They know who they are. They produce National Merit Scholars (money) and get kids into Ivy League colleges.
Baton Rouge Magnet is not elite. Episcopal of B.R. is better.
Statewide the elite schools are: Isidore Newman, Jesuit NO, Caddo Magnet, La School for MSA.

You left off the premier school, Zach. Ben Franklin is the best in the State.

frick that shite. I went to BRHS and graduated in '96. I stmt to the school board meeting with fellow students from around the world, as Buckskin Bill told everybody that our school was racist, homogeneous, and performing too well as a result. They said that that Baton Rouge was 21% black, and BRHS was 19% black and 81% white, ignoring all the rest of the races and people from the other side of the planet who attended. They said that the standards had to be stripped away in order to let any kids within 2 miles(gitto) go there with no academic standards.
It's a perfect example of douchebag liberals tearing down the successful in an attempt at "fairness," instead of learning from successful and raising standards for the underperforming. It sill makes me sick. I, and a fellow student from India(a white person according to those douches), and another from Taiwan(also a white person according to the douches) pleaded with the board members to at least visit the school top see the diversity. None of them had ever been there. They didn't give a shite. The "hearing" was held for them to justify their actions and tell the pleebs what they decided to do, not to hear from the public.

Well considering your problem (both mentally and grammatically) filled rant , I find it hard to believe you were educated at anything approaching an elite school.

Its BRHS. It will always be BRHS. Don't know why they started throwing in that magnet name. Was just fine as a magnet school using the BRHS name for a long time.

Somebody done goofed. I suspect it will be in the application for next year.

You should relocate that comma if you're going to throw stones.

I didn't claim an elite education

Edna Karr was a magnet school prior to Katrina, and was awarded the Blue Ribbon School of Excellence.

My bad for leaving them out. But I would have to see new stats to put them No. 1. Top 5 for sure.

Some history you might find interesting. Back in the 1930s La academics and athletics were dominated by 'The 3 B's'.... Baton Rouge HS, Bolton HS, Byrd HS.
They were not only all white but only served the upper class white neighborhoods. I don't know where the poor whites went to school in BR or Alexandria in those days. The poor whites in Shreveport went to Fair Park.
The reason why no New Orleans or Lafayette public schools were elite in those days was because of the dominance of private Catholic schools.
If anyone knows where poor whites went to school in BR and Alexandria back in the day I'd be interested to know.

The state doesn't want public schools to get awards.
They are pushing a charter (private school, public money) agenda.

Its not
Thats why magnet schools arent being included. How hard is it to be elite, when you gets to hand pick your students?
