I don't often watch television when I'm drunk/high, but when I do canned laughter seems really weird and intrusive to me.

I was watching "Last Man Standing" last night, and the canned laughter failed to convince me any of the jokes were funny, but it inspired me to find out who invented it. It was Charles Douglass.

It was first used on the Bing Crosby radio show and used in television in 1950.

Television executives loved canned laughter so much, they sometimes canceled shows that refused to use it.

I think it's an insult to people's intelligence. Like we don't know something is supposed to be funny.

Canned laughter (e.g. Mash) was reall weird. But on a show like Seinfeld, I really like the live audience laughter.

Most of the time I don't even consciously notice it. When I do, it does just make me feel really wierd, and it actually takes away from the experience of the show. I don't know whether canned laughter makes a show feel a lot cheesier, or it's just that cheesy shows have a tendency to use it. I think that it might be some mixture of the two.

All the worst current shows use it. Or "live studio audiences" that sound just like it.

"Filmed in front of a live audience" is just as inorganic as canned laughter. Theres no difference between the two

And thats not taking away from shows like Seinfeld, just to me Seinfeld is funny in spite of the canned laughter, not because of it.

It makes it more relaxing. I don't even have to pay attention, or laugh myself, 'cause TV do it for me. Watching TBBT is like gazing on an ever changing sunset made up of nerds and a moderately attractive woman with linebacker shoulders.

I find it weird that anyone would still used canned laughter.

And you need to get over your hatred of that show. Does Ms Patrick like it because you seemed to know a lot about it

With multiple takes it is almost impossible to use the audience's laughter every time. Every show has a certain amount of added in laughing.

Now that most shows don't use it I really notice it when I hear it. When I see Seinfeld now it feels strange to realize it has canned/live laughter but at the time I didn't think about it.

I just find it hard to go back to television that does this.

If you to see something really weird, try watching a show with the laugh track taken out Big Bang Theory

I tried to watch Sports Night as recommended by the movie and TV board but the canned laughter completely turned me off.

No, she doesn't like it either.

I just heard really good things about it, and when I finally watched it, I felt I was watching HD reruns from some 90's sitcom.

I know why it's popular. That format appeals to a lot of people. I just don't find it funny.

Agreed. The laughter is still fake as frick. The big bang theory uses it very annoyingly and makes that show unwatchable

It's absent in Season 2, FWIW.
