The ole lady want to buy a camera to get into taking pictures (weddings, new born, senior, etc) Need a suggestion for a decent camera that's not going to cost and arm and a leg. Also editing software suggestions. Please and thank you

Unless you plan on actually learning how to use the camera and not just leaving it on the auto setting, don't bother with the hassle of a DSLR or csc camera. I know everybody wants a DSLR, but for 99% of what you're talking about taking pictures of, an ultrazoom camera (or "bridge camera") is not only more than capable of doing what you want, it's far less to worry about, less expensive and more user friendly.

A DSLR will help a skilled photographer take better pictures, yes. It will not make a badly-composed shot any better. Wait on the SLR until you know what you're doing.

Indoors, or in very good light with little motion, I agree. It has limitations though. I've got both, and rarely use my P&S anymore.

Sounds like a future professional photographer in the making. There's a huge demand for those right now.

It's all about the lenses and learning about lighting and utilizing a good adjustable flash

Yes the ultrazooms have their limitations, but most people won't ever need more than that especially if he wants it for:

Yeah, I am thinking a really good WIDE ANGLE will come in handy.

My P&S does fine for landscape photography. It does shitty inside in low light or whenever there's a lot of motion. I've got two good P&S cameras (Nikon and Canon)

I use a P&S for backpacking and agree it isn't good for low light situations but it doesn't sound like that applies for what the OP's wife is looking for.

Of course, while we're on the subject the OP should post pics of the wife.

This.

We have one and couldn't be happier with it. The hard core photographers will tell you that there's better cameras out there, but for novice users, it's all you need... takes awesome pictures

We have the Nikon 3100... you can get it on Amazon for $400 right now.
