I've read the rumors for a couple of days, but paid no mind. Apparently it was confirmed by Copes and AIM. Stock is depleted virtually everywhere. Buds and SG(gone) has some, but it appears to be done.

5.45 AR pistols have been around for a while now AFAIK. Why it was deemed armor piercing now is anyone's guess. People are specifically naming JBI armory, but that seems to be mudslinging. Pretty sure Spikes has had one for a while but don't know...not into the AR scene.

posted by Copes on arfcom.....

Confirmed from the IMPORT BRANCH of the BATFE...Just got off the phone with them....Exact words No more Imports of 5.45x39 Ammo....... Don't hate me as we are OUT OF STOCK ALREADY..... Just delivering the message...

A tin is going for $375 on GB and a little over a year ago it was $125-150 a tin.

That's sucks man, you can still find it pretty damn cheap. I'm paying $400 for 1000 5.56.

Almost three years ago it was still $160-180, I have had my 74 for at least that long and never paid less than that.

There are still tins for .20/rd on gunbot right now for those wanting to flip some

I'm fixing to stock up on 7.62x54R and 7.62x39.

I don't own a gun that shoots 5.45x39.

Oh well, now you wont shoot corrosive ammo out of your AK. And you will only pay around .05-.10/rd more for it.

Yea, luckily I have several hundred rounds of surplus ammo that I got with the rifle. But now I kind of want to save all of that. I just hope that the lack of surplus doesn't increase the price and/or cause a shortage on the commercial 5.45 ammo.

FYI. The law restricts what the ATF considers armor piercing ammo in pistols. The law specifically excludes m855/ss109 and m2ap, because once upon a time the US gov used to sell surplus.

Now, why a company would develop a sole 5.45 pistol makes no sense as they would essentially destroy their own market as people really only shoot that caliber because of the cheap import.

The 5.45 is basically all steel and copper coated. The steel is malleable and mild, of course this is a ridiculous law but thats how a unfriendly gov and ATF operate.

If you want the similar to better performance in a cartridge stick to 5.56. If you like shooting that ak74 just wait for the manufactures to produce more new brass/lead ammunition. A lot of folks saw the writing on the wall when all that cheap norinco 7.62x39 was banned for import for the same reason.

all they have to do is make this a lead core bullet and its ok, from my understanding its the steel core that makes this armor piercing and must be the velocity of the round because surplus ammo is mostly steel core

if you have a 74 buy ammo today just to be safe

Ordered some commercial ammo last night so that I have a supply in case that there's a temporary shortage on the non surplus ammo.

At $0.25/ round it's not too much more expensive than 7.62x39 right now.

Yes it is, but at least I also have 3 other rifles chambered in 7.62x39. Just sucks because I just picked up the ak-74 and now I'm going to be reluctant to shoot it much until the ammo situation calms down.

frick

I traded a tin of this for 500rds of Federal .40 Hi Shok JHP a few weeks back. I think that is the first trade/sale that I got a bad deal on in retrospect.
