With the explosion in homeschooling in the last decade, can we risk children not being taught tolerance and diversity in the home? Sure, they do well in the academic arena, but are they leaning to about social issues and the environment?

In short, is the rise in homeschooling going to be a net negative to society? Can parents be trusted to educate their own children?

Yeah, I think this country can "afford" to have a certain number of children exempt from the leftist brainwashing and indoctrination.

One side says no.
One side says yes.
I side with the latter.

I don't know you, so I can't tell if you are serious, trolling, or sarcastic.

So are you suggesting that ensuring your child has a top quality education will somehow be a negative for society?

America is screwed if this mentality starts creeping in.

They do well as long as they are taught subjects correctly. Unfortunately, a primary reason for the "explosion" of homeschooling is to combat the teaching of evolution and that the universe is older than 6000 yrs.

Considering the boom is a backlash against the public system..should we trust our government to educate our children?

The answer is that we are bound to educate our children to a certain age, how and the overall quality is prescribed as a duty of the parent/guardian. What one is taught regarding social and environmental issues is certainly left to the avenues of education chosen and varies across all educational spectrums, public, private and homeschool.

No if the people that choose that path there is nothing to worry about the development of those removed from a public school. The various programs that have been used in public schools over the last two plus decades makes the teacher bound to the rules of teaching to pass the test not education of the students. I saw a show two odd years ago with five children and each was on schedule or having passed tests to graduate from high school and accepted into universities by the age of fourteen. No form of political indoctrination(public schooling teaching kids about homosexuality as normal) was a part of their education.

Link for this "fact?" Most of the folks I know that homeschool there kids do so because the public school system is academically terrible or unsafe in general. BTW, the homeschooled kids I know are great kids, perform better in all subject areas and are more socially skilled.

I have no problem with homeschooling in general. I have a few friends who were, and as you said, they are very intelligent. I only stated the one issue I have with it, which is a growing issue.

I was homeschooled, beginning in the 5th grade, because my parents thought I didn't know shite.

I really didn't know shite, despite having great grades. They put me in programs to get the "social" aspect people claim homeschooled kids miss out on, and I got to work with my dad in their small business during my formative years.

I will concede there are some pretty fricked up homeschooled kids, but there are some pretty fricked up public school kids.

I would be more concerned with trusting the government to educate our kids.

I see you've swallowed the NEA's mantra hook, line, and sinker.

This has to be a troll. You ask:
quote:

can we risk children not being taught tolerance and diversity in the home
when the question should be
quote:

can we risk children not being taught math, science, history, grammer at home?

The answer is of course. The parents who are smart enough(and have the time and money to do so) to take their kids out of public school will do a better job of teaching those subjects than public school.
