In an ESPNFC.com article by Kristan Heneage detailing the role USMNT assistant coach Andreas Herzog plays in identifying and recruiting dual-citizenship players plying their trade overseas, Zelalem is on the radar of the former Austrian national team interim head coach despite the fact that he is not a US citizen.

Zelalem, whose family is of Ethiopian heritage, was born in Germany but spent his formative years living outside Washington, D.C., where he attended Walter Johnson High School. It was there he was noticed by Arsenal.

He has trained with the US U-15s, but was recently called up to Germany’s U-17 team for UEFA Euro qualifying. Were he to appear for Germany, he wouldn’t be able to switch allegiances to the US, as only dual citizens are allowed to make a one-time change before appearing at the senior level.

You may very well think that, but of course, I couldn´t possibly comment.

I guess Randy Savage won't be too happy. I really want to see more home grown talent too but until that day comes when the MLS youth systems have gotten better we need to look at all options we have.

Yes he does. He is a chess player among checkers players. He is a true talent. Needs physical maturity, but that will come.

Jurgen should just set up a meeting with Obama and be like-

"Look, this is the only sport that 'Merica doesn't dominate internationally. We're even good at bullshite sports like Rifling. If you could sort of expediate this whole citizenship process, don't act like you're a stranger to doing that sort of thing, that'd be greattttt."

Also, it is insanely badass that they named a high school after a stud pitcher from a century ago.

the kid is pretty damn American in how he acts and talks. he came of age in the US and sounds like any other US teenager out there (at least prior to him living in London ). the biggest hurdle is going to be his work permit (not that there aren't other big hurdles). if he becomes a US citizen, he can't play for us/be in London anymore.

Yeah I wish we could find some way to expedite the process over the summer so he can try to figure out the work permit then
