What are the crowds/atmosphere like for the French Quarter Festival? I will be in the area that weekend (not for the festival) and wondering if it is a big pain in the arse if you aren't there specifically for the event. Thanks.

It's overcommercialized these days. Used to be a nice quaint festival.

It's gotten to be REALLY REALLY crowded the past few years.

I don't know that it equates to it being "overcommercialized," though. It's a freaking free festival.

I would avoid the area if you're not interested in the fest

Too big now. Was good about 5+ years ago when no one knew about it

I feel like most of the festivals have gotten this way, and that is a good indirect sign that the city is doing better IMO.

Just sucks that I don't go to these because I hate being inconvenienced very much

balls to the walls crowded throughout the quarter. I went once a few years ago and it was fun, but the crowds dissuaded me from going again. If I lived in New Orleans or was already going to be downtown that day, it's worth going to but not worth driving in and paying $20 to park for unless you love crowds, like Bourbon Street on Mardi Gras crowds.

It's fun, just crowded by certain stages. Woldenburg Park is thick with people.

I like the area by the U.S. Mint. The restauarants back by the French Market are much less crowded.

Parking is tough, but just be prepared to pay and to walk.

The weather shouldn't be too hot.

Too many people for my tastes, though beer is relatively cheap for a festival.

I agree with everything that's been said. I've been going for years. The last couple of years have been painfully crowded. Long lines to bathrooms. Long lines for beer/food.

As long as you stay out of the FQ, you'll be fine. Downtown really wasn't too bad.

I go every year. Amazing time! Just park far enough away and take the bus to and from. Avoid the street cars, they're always way to packed.

The food is amazing at the Fest so I'd avoid the restaurants anyway. IMO, Friday will be my favorite day. I'm going to see dr John @ 4 then move over and see George Porter @ 7:15. I expect the majority of people to be at the Rebirth stage at the same time so Porter is going to much lighter crowd and an AWESOME show.

I still like the fest. It's always a good family weekend. I don't have to park and also have a place down to get away from the crowds. I also don't care for the bigger stages and normally just check out the smaller song writer stages. Haven't had a bad time yet.
