UN's Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Not that the UN is worth anything, but I find some of this interesting. UDHR

quote:

Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world,

the advent of a world in which human beings shall enjoy freedom of speech and belief and freedom from fear and want has been proclaimed as the highest aspiration of the common people

All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.

Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration, without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.

Everyone has the right to recognition everywhere as a person before the law

Interested in the varying terminology. Human beings undeniably begin as zygotes and are typically born 9 months later. This declaration does not define some philosophical personhood as deserving of this right, but all human beings. But then it backtracks and says humans are born free, before then noting that there should not be discrimination based on birth. Everyone is an ambiguous term as well here.

For comparison, the Office of the High Commisioner for Human Rights, has this explanation of what human rights are: What are human rights?

quote:

Human rights are rights inherent to all human beings

Circular reasoning is reasoning that is circular.

As simple as it seems though, many people argue that these rights are inherent to people, and not to all human beings. I was just looking up the terminology used by the UN and I find it interesting that they mostly made it all-inclusive of human beings, since many of them are pro-abortion-choice.

A meaningless decree from a body with no real enforcement powers. Awesome.
