Basket floats when boiling crawfish

I have a problem when I drop the basket into my pot, it floats and I have to keep it pushed down with a paddle during boiling and soaking. I've never paid much attention to anyone else boiling before but had a couple guys ask why is it floating, so I'm assuming it's unusual. Anyone ever had this problem?

Small holes in your basket?
I could see how that would cause your basket to need to be pushed down when you 1st drop it but not that you would have to hold it down.
Unless the air of the boil is getting trapped under the basket (cause the holes are so small).

Do you know what your basket is made of?

aluminum. It won't settle down until the crawfish start to soak up the water.

I'm assuming you know the crawfish go on top of the basket and not under the basket, right?
Sorry, I just don't see how crawfish saturation/weight has anything to do with what your basket does???
I can set an empty arse basket or a full arse basket in my pot and it sinks at the same rate....
I mean, it's not like the crawfish have any effect not the basket going down, right?

Your basket may be packed too tight. The crawfish will float as you cook them and their claws are getting trapped in the holes in the side and rising up with the basket. That said, I pack mine tight and have never had this problem.
I've had them come out of the top of the pot, but never raise the basket.

Put brick at bottom, problem solved. Have seen this done in larger restaurant size pots.

I can't think of a situation to cause this problem

what size is your pot? Is the basket the correct size for your pot?

Although they were bought as a set, the basket always did seam undersized to me.

Can't say I've ever had this problem

Nothing wrong with your basket. The crawfish are floating. Just how long are you " boiling" them? Once you get to a strong simmer, count 3 minutes, cut the heat, drop in 4 or 5 pounds of ice and the basket...and crawfish...will sink and soak. If you don't add ice, turn on your hose and cool down the outside of the pot. They'll sink.

Shouldn't you be eating some frozen Chinese food from Trader Joe's and not giving bogus advice here?

That's the reason I asked. I had the same experience. The pot and basket were bought as a set. I didn't know any better and I used the set a few times. The basket always tried to float. After some investigating, I found out that the basket was the wrong size. I ended up having to buy another basket that actually fit my pot. I don't recall the specifics but I think my pot is an 80 quart and the basket was for a 60 quart pot.
Having a sack of crawfish crammed into that small basket made it float when they were cooked.

This is your problem. The basket is too small. Got a buddy that had a mix/match set. The basket always had a lot of room and it floated. Finally got the right size basket. No more floating.
