Spinoff-Putting crawfish in a pond

Reading the pond thread got me thinking. One of my ponds is pretty old and doesnt have many fish in it.Its about 1/2 an acre with some willows and cattails along the bank.I would say it might be 4 feet at the deepest point.Do yall think if I put a sack or 2 in it that they would take?I live in SW Miss so the climate is the same as Baton Rouge on average.

I would drain it and get the fish out if possible, but other than that, yeah it should work.

Ours was just kind of an epiphany. We were doing the dirt work as a primary objective. The original pond was half the size of the new one. We pumped it dry and saw that it in fact had no fish in it. We weren't sure before that, but never caught anything. Anyway, after we pumped it out, we needed the dirt and didn't have time to let it dry and dig deeper. So we just extended the levee and doubled the size leaving the average depth at 4 ft. or so.
Once it filled back up we were discussing stocking it, but it just wasn't really built for that. It's main purpose is to be a water source for cows. But after considering the size, depth, and our love of catching and eating crawfish, it was a no brainer on what to do.
Like I said, we shall see if it works, but I'm confident.

I don't know if you read my original thread about it, but they said 2 to 3 sacks an acre is the stocking rate. So if yours is 1/2 acre, I'd throw in 1 sack.
I wonder what a reasonable return is going to be if they take? I plan on putting in 1/2 sack as my pond is about 1/4 acre. I hope to be able to catch 2 or 3 sacks next year out of it and still leave plenty of seed for the future.

Do not buy crawfish that were previously chilled.. they won't work
Need to get some directly from a pond

What kind of soil? Will it hold water? What is the pH? Have a way to pump regularly?

What's the reasoning? Does the chill throw off their hibernation/burrowing clock?
Posted on 3/26/14 at 10:52 am to Clyde Tipton
I don't think it affects molting/hibernation/burrowing much. It's more for survival. If you can get some that were only on ice for a small amount of time you'll probably be fine. But a sack that's been in the cooler for a couple days would not do so well. Also, if the crawifsh are "chilled" you should stock in the morning when the water and air are coolest. (This is based on you stocking your pond later this summer when prices are down but temps are up)

I've got a slough I know of where I can go catch a few fresh pounds, and I may do that as insurance. Before this new info though, I was just going to go buy a couple of sacks and hand pick about 15 pounds of the biggest liveliest reds, and then boil the rest.

Are you in BR? If so I know where you can get sacks and request them not to be chilled.

For what you're planning on doing this would probably work fine.
Had a buddy that buys and sells crawfish that I helped build some ponds a couple years back. He asked a few of his good fishermen to hand pick him a few sacks. Had some sacks in the cooler overnight, it still worked fine. Well, I say that. He drained his ponds a years or two ago..... I think it was more work than it was worth for them....

You don't just throw the crawfish in the pond, either. Let em out on the bank, they'll find their way into the water if they like the spot.
