So Freddy Adu is currently out of soccer...
Posted by Broski on 3/26/14 at 8:55 am00
...after having just played 2 games for Bahia last season.
I don't think many people expected him to live up to "the next Pele" hype when he first came onto the scene, but damn, he isn't even getting looks in America now.
Kid just doesn't have the chest.

He should have never gone pro at 14. The MLS got what they wanted out of him for publicity and then sold him.
He is a dumbass or just had bad advice. At 14 he should have gone to one of the numerous big time youth academies that were bidding for his services.

I think his parents were the reason he didn't go overseas. Pretty unfortunate.

his MLS wages at the time were not really enough to support a family in the washington dc area

He wasn't getting that Nike contract without the visibility that MLS afforded him
ETA: I doubt very seriously that an overseas academy would have been a magic bullet for him. With any decision that was made, he was going to have an attitude problem, and his career trajectory would have changed markedly by having even average physical attributes.

i just think his body's development betrayed him
he's not big enough to sustain contact and he's way too slow to be a winger

It doesn't help that, on top of what you mentioned, you can make his arse quit with the slightest bit of contact.

He also is slightly above average at only one useful trait, dribbling. Even then he's liable to try six too many stepovers, lose possession and not track back.
He's best as a classic #10 but plays in a world where that position really doesn't exist.

To be fair, he invites it. If he'd pick his fricking head up after beating the first man, he wouldn't have to fall over every five minutes.

Actually, in terms of on-ball creativity and confidence, I think he would be better than a lot of players currently in our pool.
That pass to Landon that set up Dempsey's game winning goal in the '11 Gold Cup semi final was something that maybe only Bradley or Landon could even think of doing. Unfortunately, his small stature, fear of contact and general laziness renders his few positive skills meaningless.

I remember sitting in the waiting room at a doctors office about 3 or 4 years ago and reading an SI article and Adu and thinking "hmm it's been a while since I heard about that dude." Having a 14 year old starting in a professional league wasn't a good idea but seeing the shape MLS was in at the time they needed something to create some buzz.
My brother played against him when Adu was with a Potomac Md. club.. he was a man among boys for being in that age group.. every time they played him there were rumors that his birth certificate, etc. were faked or lost in his move. FYI this was U-12 NCSL soccer.
Dude was really 15 and pulling a Dominican baseball stunt, I'm convinced.

Well at age 12 he was physically more developed and talented than his peers by a margin, could it be natural.. sure, but I'm not certain that he wasn't just a very, very good soccer player playing below his age and it catching up to him when he came into the big time.
Either way it sucks, I was really looking forward to him as a face of US Soccer, by all accounts he was a good dude.

I don't think a big club academy would have saved Fredy's career. We're talking about a player that couldn't win a starting spot for the Union a couple years back.
