USF has to kill head coaching deal w/Masiello after issues in background check

South Florida officials were forced to "kill the deal" with Manhattan coach Steve Masiello late Tuesday after finding a "previously undetected discrepancy in his background check," according to a report from The Tampa Tribune.
The background-check discrepancy was discovered by Eastman & Beaudine.
That's a Texas-based search firm that USF paid $60,000 to help find a new coach.
As CBSSports.com first reported, Masiello agreed to a five-year deal worth more than $1 million per year to replace Stan Heath early Tuesday. Hours later, that report was confirmed by ESPN.com, and The Tampa Tribune later reported that Masiello actually "signed" the deal.
Louisville AD Tom Jurich was even quoted with a glowing review of Masiello's hire.
Masiello worked for Jurich while an assistant under Rick Pitino.
"Stevie can do whatever he wants to," Jurich told The Tampa Tribune in a phone conversation on Tuesday afternoon. "He's just terrific. He's a rising star in this business."
Then, late Tuesday, Masiello's background check became an issue.
Why wasn't the background check completed before Masiello received and accepted an offer? That's a question USF officials will need to answer Wednedsay. Meantime, the school is back to searching for Heath's replacement, and whether Masiello will be in a position to return to Manhattan under these circumstances remains unclear.
Masiello last week finished his third season at Manhattan.
He led the Jaspers to their first NCAA Tournament since 2004.

I don't think I can ever recall something like this happening.

I hear Anthony Grant has a squeaky clean record USF. You should take another look.

What was the issue. arrest? Bad grades at UK? Lied on his resume? Anyway, bad move by USF, Steve would had been a great coach there.

Didn't he scam a bunch of people for Ky Derby tickets? Seems like when that came out, he ended up out of Louisville and on to Manhattan.

Schools need to pay firms $60,000 to find their basketball coach candidates?
So...what the frick does their A.D. actually do? Have collegiate search committees been completely eliminated?

They paid $100k for that firm to find their AD.

Depending on what they find, Manhattan needs to move on also.

Brett McMurphy is saying he had the offer pulled beacause he never actually graduated from Kentucky like his resume said he did.

This guy just found himself between a rock and a hard place. Can't go to new job, may not be able to go back to his old job, and if he does I imagine that would be a pretty awkward locker room.

Mike and MIke just reported he never graduated from UK, so he's fricked regardless in terms of jobs

quote:Happens all the time in the major sports, mostly for plausible deniability. "Coach, have you been contacted by Suchnsuch U for their open position?" He can honestly say no, because the feelers are put out by the search firms. They do the initial work,a nd then when a pool of three or four candidates are finalized, then teh AD and/or the committee will meet to do the interviews.

So how did this get past Manhattan when they hired him?
Or Louisville?
Or Louisville?

Why would he lie about something that's so simple to verify? There have to be a lot of coaches that don't have their degrees.
EDIT; Come to think about it, I guess you can't convince players to go to class if you didn't graduate from college yourself.
