I have an opportunity to rent on Spanishtown Rd. and I'm curious if any posters have lived in this area before, could you provide some insight? Pros, Cons, etc.

There's no grocery store nearby. That sucks. Otherwise it's a cool place for a young person to live. Or an older gay.

I've lived in Spanish Town since fall 2006. I love it here. It's a real neighborhood, with colorful characters. You actually know your neighbors. And it's great to be here for Mardi Gras.
And the Spanish Town Grocery has new owners who have stepped up their game. Plus, the downtown Matherne's should open at the end of the year.
About the biggest problem is absentee landlords. Folks who don't take care of their properties or who are kind of nutty. And you do have to look out for dumb crime -- my wife and I both had our cars broken into. Just don't leave any valuables or valuable looking stuff in your car -- I'm talking about bags that look like they could have a laptop in them.

I've walked at night and never gotten messed with. I used to get banged up at Red Star and stagger home with no worries. Now I do have a neighbor who had a tranny walk into his house one night.

I wanted to live here when I was going to move to BR but I couldn't find any open apartments. Seemed like the damn neighborhood was about three blocks by three blocks.

I'll look again when I (hopefully) attend LSU grad in 2015.

If you're not handy, make sure you get a good landlord. Had to fix quite a few things myself. Other than that it's a great place for someone my age (20s). Hound dogs is a pretty good dive if you like shitty bars.

I was always under the impression it was a gay bar. Is that not the case?

Is it the house on the corner of Spanish Town and 8th?

I lived there for a year or so in college. (3) bedroom, (3) bathroom for around $800.00 back around 2001-2003.

The area was not as attractive as it is now (Downtown bars, ect.) but overall I liked it. I was working for a corporate law firm at the time in One American Place so it was real convenient.

I really enjoyed jogging downtown at night up to the Capitol and through downtown when everything was closed up. Felt like I was Rocky climbing those steps.

Partied harder in that house than any other place I stayed. Spanish Town Parade parties were always a big shite show.

Yeah it's just a dive bar that has a slightly higher percentage of gay patrons than the typical BR bar.

I've heard of rent ranging from 500 to 700 for a one bedroom. I'm on the lower end.

I hope the new matherne's will be a game changer for the area.

I equate it to living in certain areas of the Garden District, which is where I currently live. Lots of character (:

If you don't take them up on the offer and it's a 1 bedroom and it's open availability, can you FB/text/whatever me?

It doesn't feel like one. I've heard that it is one too.

Everyone was a regular and super friendly. I had a great time playing pool and hanging out.
